Comments: International School of Sosua is a very friendly island school with a laid back, earthy atmosphere. Dominican coffee in the mornings and home-made rice and bean lunch in the afternoon bring the staff and students together to eat at large wooden tables – while roosters strut about outside on the lovely tree strewn premises. One must contend with third world elements such as mosquitoes, wasps, toilets that don’t always work, etc., but the homey feeling of the school helps to mitigate the inconveniences…

International School of Sosua is a ten minute walk to the beach, set in the lovely hillside just outside the touristy town of Sosua…

The salaries at International School of Sosua are low, but the cost of living is cheap and most people save 25-50%. Housing is not provided and one can find the initial transition very difficult, especially in the heat of August. Long term plans for the school including new classrooms and teacher housing will make it much more attractive…

A good choice for young active teachers who enjoy water sports. Some teachers have reported feeling isolated and/or lonely. Even paradise can be vacuous without a support system. Hopefully these needs will be addressed in the future by finding more ways to bring teachers together, perhaps in grouped housing…

The curriculum at International School of Sosua is being pulled together slowly, still a bit fragmented. Teachers have a great deal of autonomy at the moment which has its pluses and minuses. Communication problems do surface from time to time. Although there are regular weekly meetings, it would behoove the school to have teachers meet regularly with their colleagues to plan/share and feel more united in school spirit…

Yes, some problems, but all very solvable. I believe the school has a great future ahead…
