I was hired as the Early Childhood Coordinator for Surefoot American International School in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria... In order to obtain my visa for travel to Nigeria I had to undergo a very difficult and detailed process with the High Commission, which was very delayed because the Surefoot American International School did not send the appropriate paperwork until the very last minute... Upon being hired to work at Surefoot American International School I was told my start date would be August 8, 2010. On August 15th, 2010, I finally received my flight.. I arrived at the Surefoot American International School to complete chaos, which was expected in the lead up to the school year, particularly in a very new and developing school... The Surefoot American International School was a challenge...the staff are mostly untrained, have been told that corporal punishment is not an issue, however... The materials available at Surefoot American International School, particularly reading materials, were scarce... While the Surefoot American International School claims to be an American International school, they have yet to be accredited, and have a very long way to go before accreditation is even an option... Beyond the Surefoot American International School, life is incredibly difficult in Calabar...
