Comments: The
Banda School is in Langata, a pleasant suburb of Nairobi,
just round the corner from the village of Karen (of Karen
Blixen and “Out of Africa” fame). The Banda
School grounds
are pleasant and the setting is idyllic. The Ngong Hills are
visible from the school and opposite
is the Nairobi National Park. There are not many schools
that have a family of warthogs wandering across the cricket
pitches!
The Banda
School Nairobi is
essentially an English preparatory school, preparing pupils for
the 13+ Common Entrance examinations. Banda
School Nairobi is
co-educational and a member of the IAPS. The curriculum more
or less follows the British National Curriculum.
The staff at Banda
School Nairobi are
mostly British, with a few Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans.
There is a happy atmosphere among the staff and several teachers
who had left later returned to the school because they missed
teaching at The Banda. For once, it is not an exaggeration to
say that there is a cheerful, family atmosphere. The pupils (a
very international mixture of Brits, black Kenyans, white Kenyans,
Asians and lots of other nationalities) are a pleasant, well-motivated
collection of children. Most of the pupils go to nearby Hillcrest,
but a few move on to boarding English schools...
