Skyrocketing Rent in Beijing

Post by gr8teach »

Hi all,

Just wondering what people think of the fast rising rent prices in BJ? Any word from IS's how they will accommodate the new costs? It seems the prices have risen by 25 percent in the past three months.

What do people in BJ think? What do teachers headed there think?

I have a pretty good idea what the ISs will do and its nothing. Contracts have already been signed and agreed too, salary schedules and housing allowances are already in place. I think the only real difference will be that more teachers who would have taken the housing allowance may elect to take the provided housing benefit.
A few will just cut back elsewhere in their budget, and some will move to less expensive housing. Most ITs get very generous housing packages by Chinese standards. There is usually an increase in housing costs as summer approaches and tourists (both domestic and foreign) are looking for short term apartments and condos for extended vacations.
