Actually they told you all you needed to know. If there were no problems your associate would have indicated your references were fine. Since they wont discuss the issue, it means the reference is not a strong/positive one. Im not "guessing" thats just how its done.
You need to ask for the reference to be pulled, and be prepared if your associate declines (which they may as well do).
