I think I have to disagree with the poster above me. In this round of recruiting, schools who had IB positions were mostly interested in teachers with IB experience. But I was able to talk myself into a few interviews because I had familiarity with the program- through reading and self-study by a school I worked at. I think having the training would have also helped in terms of getting the interview- at least at the better schools.

It seems schools will try to get teachers with IB experience first, but having AP or A level experience helps, and knowing what the IB is all about gives you a leg up too. I think if you're interested in the IB and will be looking for a job in the near future, why not go for it?

IB Training Questions

Just accepted a job at a school in Dubai. The school will be going full-on IB (if the IB visit works out as planned) next year. They are sending me for training, but it's up to me to make the arrangements. I'll be teaching DP English A and possibly MYP English A. So my questions are:

1. Are there places that are better for the training or should I just take something that's close to my home base? (Egypt now, NYC in the summer)

2. Are the online training sessions any good?

3. It would be hard to squeeze in both MYP and DP. If I can only do one, which should it be?

4. This sounds stupid, but is it best to start with category 1 classes?

Any other guidance/advice for a new IB teacher is appreciated. By the way, I have 15 years experience and have taught AP for 5 years.

Thanks in advance.

We went two years ago with a three year old. We posted an ad on the UNI college's job board and had many, many people apply for the babysitting job. Of course it was hard to trust someone you don't know, but I did check references and many of the students were early childhood or education majors- more than qualified.

If you're interested, I might even be able to find the email of the young lady we used. She was wonderful.

Of course your kids are a lot older. Can't they stay in the hotel room by themselves? I wouldn't take them to interviews, but we found recruiters wanted to meet our son outside of the official fair time.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice. Only problem is they are not posting PE positions. I can't apply for something if they don't have something for my wife, right?

Talk Me Down Off the Ledge

So my wife and I have decided we need to move on from our jobs in the middle east. We're an American couple, certified, with about 15 years experience. I'm certified for secondary math and English, she is certified to teach PE for K-12, excellent references. We haven't found a ton of job matches in schools we'd like to go to, but we have found some.

We're not going to a job fair. I spoke to a lot of people and read a lot about this issue before making this decision. EVeryone said any experienced teaching couple with good references would get scooped up before the job fair.

Here's the problem: We haven't heard from anyone! My wife is OK, but I'm starting to panic. We don't want to stay where we are, but we have to make a committment to leave in the next few weeks. Although I didn't expect a job offer by now, I did expect to hear from a few schools or have some skype interviews scheduled.

What do you think? For those of you who went the non-job fair route, when did you get contacted? interviewed? job offers? If I don't hear anything before the major fairs, should I assume that all the good jobs will be gone?

We don't have a job or home to go back to in the U.S. Help!!!!

H1N1 (Swine) Flu

Just wondering if any of you have had cases of H1N1 flu in your international school and what the school's procedures for dealing with it were.

We're struggling with this now- closing the school, sending work home, etc. I'd like to know how other schools/countries are handling it.

We're open to anywhere except the Middle East- been there, done that.
We've started our research with Asia, but we're open to Africa and Central/South America, even Eastern Europe.

Thanks for your reply. I know the other schools, but what is TAS? Taiwan?

Wow. Is the tide turning on how international schools hire? We're looking for a move for the 2010-2011 school year, and it'd be nice not to have to deal with the expense and headache of the job fairs.

I'd like to ask the posters above and anyone else: Are the first tier of schools hiring by skype and phone too? If I want to interview with Shanghai and ASIJ and JIS, etc. will I have to do a job fair?
