How much do you make tutoring???

Hello All,

I am trying to get a feel for how much IT's are able to supplement their income from tutoring. Please put your current city and how much you actually make tutoring.

I'll start...

Tianjin China 250/300 rmb per hour for private students in my home. I also worked for a language school that paid me 400rmb/hr plus transport to a local oil company to teach business English classes. ( 100RMB= $14.50 USD)

QF Doha Fair Invite/Still need to join ISS ?

Hello,

I am interested in attending the Qatar Foundation/ISS Fair in Doha this December. If I receive an invite from QF, do I still need to join ISS in order to attend? Not sure I want to join Search again nor do I really want to join ISS just to attend the fair.
Does anyone have experience in this matter that might give me some definitive answer?

Thanks,

HM

Bangkok fairs this week…how is it going?

Anyone have any impressions from the ISS fair earlier in the week, or the ongoing Search fair. I would love to hear a report.

Good luck to all who are looking.

Re: question re: RMB (currency)

OP,

Are you sure it doesn't say 50,000USD equivalent paid in RMB. I am in a "middle of the pack" school pay wise, and my salary is 50,000 USD (equivalent) paid in RMB. You should check again. As stated in previous posts the figures don't match a realistic salary (50,000RMB whether monthly or yearly).

Re: What is your "DREAM" job ???

Thank you all so much for the responses.

fine dude,
I also am looking for the place where admin truly takes into account the voice of teachers. Oddly enough, PD is also a sore issue where I am presently. I am the chairman of the PD committee. I asked to be switched to another committee this year because our whole committee felt as if we had become little more than the group that collected staff requests for PD funds. I was talked into staying on in the position. unfortunately, the situation seems to have actually gotten worse this year.
I guess another part of my dream would be to find a school where people stayed long term. My wife and I are really longing for a sense of community. I understand the transient nature of international education, but it would be great to be in a good school where people stayed for more than one contract.

buffalofan, I too long for the opportunity to continue to grow as both a student and educator. I am fifty now and have been quite fond of telling my students that always say, "I cannot wait to be finished with school", that I have been a "student" for 27 years of my life so far.Hang in there it CAN be done. I've gotten two Master's degrees after the age of forty. I am trying to find a way to get my Doctorate next (isn't dreaming great :)

curiousme, I have felt the "initiative" sting more times than I care to count. It is very disheartening to get really excited, to totally buy-in to a new initiative, one that will clearly be a benefit to everyone, to find it fall to the wayside due to some "unforeseen" occurrence. If initiatives were well thought out, well planned, and undertaken for the right reasons, things would be so much better. It is unfortunate that so many initiatives that our leaders implement are carried out seemingly to build a resume. Harry Truman once said, "It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit". Wouldn't it be great if everyone ascribed to this credo? Wouldn't it be great to realize the dream of working at such a place? Who would ever leave? It is becoming increasingly evident that once people land jobs in these places, they stay. I WANT this.

Do our dream jobs exist? I am an eternal optimist. I feel that they do, we simply must continue to search for them and to try to affect positive change as much as possible. When the time comes we will end up where we belong.

Please keep the thoughtful responses coming.

What is your "DREAM" job ???

Hi All,

With fair season fast approaching I thought it might be fun to find out what others see as their "DREAM" job and why?
I am a SPED/SEN guy at heart. That said, I am also a Social Studies fan with a huge interest in Geography (but much more experience in Gov/Econ).
My dream jobs would be in a school that truly embraces special needs, a school that is not just "talking the talk". I love creating programs (I've just had a hand in putting a true SPED program in place at my current school). I would love to be in a place to teach geography from a cultural/sociological perspective. Might work in an IB program, but I have no IB experience and it is proving difficult to get. Again, a lot of this is simply a dream. Although I have tried to keep a foot in the Social Studies/regular education world, I am more in demand in SPED/Learning Support. I am also now on the wrong side of 50 and will be needing to take that into consideration while dreaming. I will have to be going to Latin America or some other regions soon as I will not be able to work in Asia or the Middle East too much longer due to my age.
So I guess my "dream" job might include a combination of SPED and Social Studies with a road to admin. eventually.

What are the rest of you looking/hoping for.

Re: Any Information on Brighton College Al Ain UAE?

Thanks Ddd,
Anyone else with first hand knowledge of this school? Anyone else experience issues with non-payment at end of contract? Is there any reasonable recourse in these types of matters?
Any and all would be appreciated.

Any Information on Brighton College Al Ain UAE?

Does anyone have any information on the school which I understand is in it second year of existence. Anyone currently there that would like to share their experiences? I have seen a job posting and would like to find out a bit more about the school before deciding to apply or not.

Thanks,

HM

Re: Qatar, UAE, Oman, Best Schools/Packages/Living Standard

Thank you so much for the replies.

Mike, what are your feelings about QF in general, and any specifics you might have about individual schools?

Teachit, what would you say the savings potential is like there in Oman (and at your specific school, if you don't mind me asking)?

Anyone else want to weigh in?

Thank You !!!

Re: Qatar, UAE, Oman, Best Schools/Packages/Living Standard

Okay, I seem to be having a problem getting information. Perhaps my original post is a bit too subjective. How about this,if you are currently working in a school in one of these countries please tell me what school you are at, if you are planning to stay for another contract (why or why not)?
Any help would be appreciated. I thank in advance all that take the time to respond.

Qatar, UAE, Oman, Best Schools/Packages/Living Standard

Hello All,
I am presently preparing for hiring season for 2015-2016 school year. I am pretty sure I wan to go to one of the above countries and hope to stay long term. I am wanting first hand opinions of what schools people perceive as having the best combination of school situation, quality of package, and standard of living. I am a SPED teacher with many years of experience, advanced degrees, and overseas experience. I have a non-teaching spouse that is a qualified/certified ESL teacher that would be interested in part time work or substitute teaching at the same school if it were available (but this not a deal breaker by any means). With all of this in mind, which schools do you believe would be places for me to begin my search? Also, are any of you aware of possible openings in one of these "recommended" schools for the 2015-2016 school year? Please feel free to PM me if you would prefer.
Thanks,
HM

My wife is in a similar position. There is NO WAY for her to work in China as the laws became much more restrictive as of September 2013. I wish her luck.
