Jess, yes I am using co-teachers and I am at a charter school, which means I am an at-will employee, so I can also be fired without notice. I don't want anyone knowing, except the teachers writing the references. This school was my first teaching job, and I've been here almost two years. I have another question...on many school websites they ask for you to complete their application. On that application they ask for you to put down your current supervisor and school of course. My question is, do I put down the reference I used as a supervisor or do I put down the Principal? I really feel like the P will give negative reviews of my work as a teacher, just because I don't bow down to her like some other staff members.

PsyGuy

PsyGuy would you be willing to look over a resume and cover letter for an international teaching job and critique it?

Yeah our school doesn't have a curriculum person, assistant principal, or any of that. I definitely didn't plan on throwing her under the bus at a job fair or any interview, because that is unprofessional. However, do you have any suggestions on how I could answer this question if schools ask? I was thinking of saying that I chose the people who have actually spent the most time in my classroom/observing me.

I know I can't be the only one...

who is trying to enter international teaching from a school in the U.S. in which you don't want to use/can't get a recommendation from you Principal. The job fair that I am going through needs one recommendation to be from a supervisor. Well, I've worked two years at a school in which the P was a tyrant, micromanager, that treated the students, teachers, and parents like crap. My first year there, she was barely in our classroom. For those of us who don't sway to her will, she makes our life a living hell. I have a mentor teacher that observed me at the school during my first year there. I just wonder what I should do in this situation.

Resume or CV?

Hello,
I plan on applying for an international teaching position for the 2012-2014 school years. Although I have been overseas for a brief period in the past, I am completely new to this whole international teaching thing. I was wondering if I should use a CV or a resume when applying to schools/job fairs? I also will be attending the UNI fair in February. Thanks for your help.
To iteach314: What are you basing your criteria on, in regards to the place you want to teach? Apart from the quality of the school, what countries interest you? Are you making the choices based on financial potential savings, the climate, the culture, the access to surrounding countries etc?
I am looking to experience culture, save a nice lump of money, and climate doesn't matter. I've been looking at Middle East and parts of Asia. It seems that to teach in Japan would be so competitive and I don't want to end up at the lower tier schools. I will have had 2.5 yrs of teaching by the time the school year ends in June 2012. Access to surrounding countries is not a biggie to me if the culture is rich in the country in which I teach and if there are plenty of opportunities to explore and learn.

Has anyone been hired through this program or do you have any feedback?

Thanks Psyguy. You mentioned that you indicated race, gender, marital status in your cover letter. How do you go about mentioning that? Is it something along the lines of "I am a single, African American woman who is committed to a lifetime of facilitating student achievement..."? I tried to PM you but it's not working.

Thanks for the advice. I'm definitely thinking of Abu Dhabi or Southeast Asia. I have another totally unrelated question...When I send my application packet to international schools, should I send a CV or a resume? Does it really matter.

Finally ready for my adventure but need help

Hello all,
I am about to begin my 2nd year of teaching l in the U.S. and I really want to teach overseas next year. A few years ago, I did my student teaching in Germany for five months with DoDDs, and a teacher worked with tried to get me to apply for the year after I graduated, but I wanted to experience life in the States for a few years. NOW, I am ready to leave. I loved the experience. Living and working in Europe would be ideal, however, I've heard horror stories of how high taxes and cost of living is and how the teacher's salary barely covers it. So, I'm leaning towards schools in the Middle East (specifically U.A.E.) and Asia. Right now I'm signed up to receive a registration packet from the UNI fair when they send them out in September.

Questions:
What else should I be doing at this time to prepare for a possible move next year? I've been doing research as well.
Can anyone that works in the UAE give me some advice?

What is the best part of Asia to work , in order to save a nice sum of money and live comfortably, and perhaps travel every now and then?

What advice do you wish someone had told you when you were looking for your first international teaching job? :P
