I taught ESL in South Korea before going to graduate school to get my MA in TESOL. I taught ESOL in the US (high need area) while getting my certification. After 2 years of that, I went to a teaching job fair.

I now teach ESL at an international school abroad. The school that hired me told me time teaching in Korea was an asset.

There are a lot of Koreans all around the world, so if you want to go into teach at international schools, I would say your time in Korea would be a great thing to mention in an interview.

For what it’s worth, I love teaching ESL. I think it’s much better than being in a classroom all day with the same kids.

Good Luck!

Americans at British Schools?

Hi everyone,

I'm an American teacher. Is it even worth applying to teach at British schools?

Thanks!

Would you consider NIST easy to get a job at or is it just easier compared to ISB?

Extra Certifications?

Hi everyone,

I live in a state where I can add extra certifications to my already existing one (in ESOL) by taking and passing the Praxis II exam in that area.

I have been teaching elementary ESOL and I'm considering taking the tests to add an elementary certification or maybe an English 6-12 certification.

My question is, would this be helpful? All of my teaching experience would be in ESOL, so would having extra certification areas be helpful at all?

I should mention that I'm part of a teaching couple. My husband is certified in Spec ed., art, and elementary and his teaching experience is in spec ed. and art.

Thanks!

Hi Ween,

I was looking at this school too. They have a lot of job openings, so I wonder if that means a lot of teachers recently left or they are expanding.

I looked at the school website and the staff seems to be a mix of qualified and unqualified teachers. I was particularly looking at the ESL/ELD teachers (that's what I teach), and none of the teachers seem to have anymore than a random B.A. + random TEFL certification course.

Try this website...some of the reviews are old...and not so good. Perhaps it's changed since then.

Mid Year Placements

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if I could have your advice on my current teaching situation.

My fiancé and I both taught in Korea for 2 years and now we are back in the USA obtaining our teaching credentials. In May 2011, he will finish his MAT and be certified to teach art, elementary and special education. In December 2011, I will finish my MA TESOL program and be certified to teach ESOL K-12. I currently have a job teaching ESOL in the public schools because ESOL is such a high need area where we live.

What we really want to do is teach abroad in an international school somewhere in South East Asia or China. We DON’T want to go back to teaching in private language schools like we did in South Korea. Also....neither of us is thrilled about working for the US public schools and we are both dreading spending another year teaching here.

Are there mid year placements at international schools? When I graduate in December, what are our options? I need to decide now because I need to tell my school if I am continuing with them next year. Should we both take teaching jobs in the USA for the 2011-2012 school year just try for international schools for the 2012/13 school year?

Thank you!!!!!
