Re: Reply

PsyGuy made two comments that I take issue with:

First, a blanket statement like calling the admin "draconian" without evidence, is a little bit unfair. Let's stick to facts, and not make unfounded claims. I have personally dealt with two admin from CIS. I found them to be both positive and professional.

Secondly, "The teacher involved is likely going to do jail time, and based on the family influence might never make it out of the Philippines alive (incidents happen in Filipino prisons)." This is completely false. I want to warn readers to only pay attention to current information from people who are directly involved in the process.

I would like to encourage everyone in this forum to be reflective and kind as we write about complex, real-world situations.

Another school worth checking out is the liger learning center

http://www.ligercambodia.org/liger-lear ... ng-center/

Well known international education leaders Robert Landau and Bambi Betts are involved, so I imagine that it would also be professionally rewarding as well.

One of the students told me the food in the cafeteria is horrible. :-) Sorry, I don't have anything better than that. Macao would be a kind of interesting place to live for a few years. Being that close to HK would be pretty nice.

I just want to apologize for senator on this one. We stayed up late last night drinking malt liquor, watching Full Metal Jacket and reading ISR. I realize that it was an error, and it won't again. Sometimes things get a little bit raw here in northern Sudanistan.

Actually, I think that ap is going to make a comeback. The new capstone program looks like it will complete really well with IB. Plus international schools in competitive regions/cities want to differentiate what they offer so they will adopt AP or offer both.

You'll notice hkis is the only international school offering it right now.

If you can do better, don't go. If you can't do better, it may not be that bad of a tier 3 school.

Like the previous poster said, it does have a nice campus.

It's a really old school that has a core of teachers who are dedicated to doing things the old way. If you come from a Western edu background, at times it will feel like you've stepped into 1800s. That said, I was impressed with some of of the key leaders I met there, and I had the feeling that the school is moving in the right direction... slowly.

Salary is going to be the big issue. I believe that it's posted on their website.

Cebu would truly be a wonderful place to live. There are many taxis that can be used quite cheeply. There are many restaurants that produce food and drink to western standards. Weekend travel opportunities are many, if you enjoy beaches and diving. International travel is also easy from Cebu, so one can see a large amount of SEA during the period of a two year contract.

This year, the school did have two students die on a field trip. I have no idea how this affects daily life, but one of the parents is a powerful member of the community and is currently sueing the school. Most educators who know of the situation consider it to be extremely messy and unfortunate.

Bali

Two thoughts:
I know a youngish female living in the pudong part of shangers. She does just fine dating only euro and n American guys. I think it helps if you are at an elite level school and already go in those circles. Water always finds its level.

What about Bali? There are lots of western females (mostly Aussies I think) who date Balinese men. Strangely though, I didnt see many Balinese girls with western guys. In LTRs at least.

I noticed that no one has responded to your question yet. I visited roberts college, and knew people who worked there about five years ago. The reason I'm replying(and I could be wrong) is that i don't think very much changes at roberts college from year to year.
Roberts college is one of the oldest international schools in Istanbul. the campus is really nice, in an elite prep school sort of way. It's location is the best of any of the international schools in Istanbul. If you could live nearby the school it would be very nice.
For salary, I don't know any exact numbers, but you should be able to live comfortably and save a little.
For responsibilities outside of class, my impression was that there were some, but you aren't required to stay until 7 every day, or something like that.
The catch is that the Turkish ministry of edu puts a lot of requirements on international schools in turkey. I'm not going to try to explain it, but there a lot of policies handed down that allow students to have massive amounts of absences without penalty, and take special end of year exams which can be substituted for grades on report cards, things that really make teachers lives difficult.
Let us know how it turns out. If you do go, I think that you will love Istanbul and love turkey.

Don't be afraid. I would attend whether your school in Africa was planning on being there or not. If you see a representative from your old school, don't hold a grudge, and at least say hello to them. Time changes things. If confronted by anyone, stick to the facts. As a chem teacher, you'll find people who are willing to give you anther chance.

In this type of situation, it's common to ask to talk with a couple of current employees who would be in your dept, and/or working at your same pay level. You can bounce questions off of them, without having to worry so much about the principal pulling one over on you.

The health benefits piece could be a real problem. Don't forget that.

Tough call

I have been to Naples and all over Italy, on multiple trips, over months of time. I love Southern Italy, and the Dolomite Mountains in the North. I would love to live there.

Working there is perhaps a different matter. I would factor in: where are you in your career? Beginning, mid, end? What is your retirement situation looking like? How long do you want to live overseas? Etc. With living expenses, plus lots of travel, will you be able to save money, or will you be negative? La Dolce Vita may not be so sweet. Career wise, it may not be a good professional move for a mid-late career person, as the school may lack PD and resources, and be generally a poor educational institution.

If it's your 1st job, great! Enjoy. If you are mid-late career, why not work somewhere that pays good money, is good for you professionally, and spend your vacation time in Italy?

Re: S\E asia - teacher heaven!
I am surprised to HK international top the list! They are one of the lowest payigg intl schools in HK (approx $40,000us per year).

Here is my list

ESF Hong Kong - pays well, but can be a little stifling!
Chinese INternational HK
UWC Singapore
Intl SChool Bangkok - but reputation on a downward spiral
Jakarta Intl
Hanoi United Nations

Just my 2 cents worth!
Really nice list Grey Wolf. I would add Concordia Shanghai.
