Re: Would non-education stuff damage my application ?

I've abbreviated everything and fiddled with the headers and formatting (all unnecessary spaces downsized to size 4)...and I've shortened my resume down to 3/4 of a page.

Re: Would non-education stuff damage my application ?

The bulk of my resume consists of my profile, contact info, the classes I teach (I've been given 4 to 5 different classes per year), my degrees (~5), my certifications (~3), and my interests (3 languages, multiple subject tutoring, and stuff that could translate into coaching extracurricular activities). I don't think I could throw anything out.

Re: Would non-education stuff damage my application ?

Thanks everyone!

Thanks to all of your advice, I've downsized my resume down to one and one third of a page with all the relevant details and condensed everything down to just teaching two different fields of math and biology.

Re: Would non-education stuff damage my application ?

Thanks, wrldtrvlr123 !

In that case, I'll make a resume and a CV, and get rid of unrelated and short-term stuff. Would an IS ever ask for a CV ?

Would non-education stuff damage my application ?

I'm prepping for applying to ISs in Asia, and have been hearing all sorts of conflicting opinions on what and what not to include in my resume. Could someone give me an opinion on certain parts that I am uncertain about, based on their IS experiences ?

I'm currently an American secondary math teacher, and will probably apply for either a math or science position. I'm certified in math, chemistry, and physics in the US, and recently got the QTS for the UK. I've already got two years of teaching experience by now. I know that my degrees, certifications, and current education experiences are required for my resume. I know that I need to include my own photo, and personal contact info.

Wasn't sure if I need to include a paragraph about my teaching philosophy or what I'm looking for. I had been told in the past those sections were a waste of space, but am not clear if these parts are necessary for an IS application.

Education isn't my first or second career choice, and so my resume has a bunch of non-education related stuff. I don't mind including them as long as they don't damage my application. My resume's already at a maximum 3 pages. Here's what I have:

tutoring (math, science, economics at college level),
brief online tutoring (secondary math and chemistry),
volunteer community service in different medical settings (eg: hospitals),
leadership roles during college (club officer positions, mentor, tutor),
science research and publications (biotech stuff, DNA manipulation, etc),
summer camp counselor roles (teaching secondary students physics, robotics, computer aided design, basic
engineering)
hobbies and interests (sports, languages, Toastmaster),
awards received during college

What else are ISs looking for in an applicant other than classroom experience, teaching philosophy, familiarity with certain curricula and technology, experience with english language learners, and ability to adapt to overseas situations ?

Re: QTS Certification

Psyguy,

Thanks for the clarification.
This is the site: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/qualified-t ... status-qts
and then I went into the part regarding getting QTS for teachers qualified in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the USA to apply.

Is this certificate good for only the UK, Europe, and the EEA? Is it recognized in Asia ? I was looking into internatonal schools in Hong Kong and China, and they kept mentioning PGCE, and QTS as qualifications.

QTS Certification

I found a site - National College for Teaching and Leadership from the UK government - claiming to give QTS certificate to any teachers either trained in the UK, europe, or in USA. Is this the legitimate site for getting the QTS certificate because the whole process didn't ask for any processing fees whatsoever. I'm a bit worried because in the USA, I do get charged a hefty sum for my teaching certificates.

Interview questions

Hi,

This has probably been covered before, but couldn't search the terms for being "too common".

I've read the pages on tough interview questions and similar pages, but I'm wondering about two things in regards to the interview.

1) Interviewers will very likely ask questions about classroom pedagogy, education philosophy, stuff from the resume, what I use to keep up with current trends, and how to handle so and so situations. Will the interviewers ask questions about your content knowledge (say if I apply for a history teaching position, will I get questions about the subject matter) ? If they do, what is the proportion of content knowledge questions compared to the ones concerning teaching methods?

2) For the interviews, is bringing the resume/CV enough? Should I also bring a portfolio of the lesson plans I have created over the years? If I have a webpage that I use for my current teaching job, is it a good idea to let the interviewers know about it ?

Thanks.

Re: Advice on ISs in SE Asia

Psyguy,

Thank you for your advice! I was actually planning to apply for the 2018-2019 year. I will definitely look into the TES that you had recommended. On a related note, if I apply directly to the schools' own websites rather than through the IS fairs, must I have letters of recommendation included in the application? and do these letters have to be from the principal of my current workplace ?

Advice on ISs in SE Asia

I have been going through the forum and have not found anything that pertains to my situation yet. I would appreciate if anyone could give me advice on what to do to increase my chances of getting hired by an IS in SE Asia given my situation:

I'm currently in my second year as a mathematics teacher at a non-IB American high school (I've taught classes ranging from Algebra I to AP Statistics) and a biology teacher at a nearby community college. I've also tutored other sciences (biology, chemistry, and physics) online and at the AP and college level. I have a preliminary teaching credential for CA, and a provisional license for AZ (both of them covers math, chemistry, and physics). As for my background, I've got a M.Ed, a M.A. in biological sciences, and BSs in Biochemistry and Chemical Engineering (I found out really late that I preferred teaching above all else). I'm currently working on getting a Google Educator level I certificate.

If I want get into a SE Asia IS, what else should I work on? Should I go for an IB certificate (I tried asking the IB but was told that it depends on the school I'm applying for)? a PGCE certificate and maybe QTS? Is applying during my third year just too soon?
