Grade Inflation and subsequent retaliation

In schools around the world, how many of you have witnessed grade inflation and subsequent retaliation?

I've now worked in three different schools where this has happened. I've personally seen people unfairly dismissed in retaliation for not changing a failing grade to a passing grade for students of wealthy families who thought they could buy their kid's grade, or because their kid needed the [fake] passing grade to get a scholarship for the university of their choice (unfairly taking away money from a truly deserving scholar).

I've also seen history of teachers grading for completion and not for accuracy, and then a new teacher who didn't know the game, graded honestly and was dismissed because they weren't keeping with the status quo of pleasing parents.

I've also seen teachers give inflated marks by assessing students on below grade level material. These same students get passing grades, but then fail grade level standardized assessments. Those teachers get to keep their jobs because parents are happy. They are also the ones who get great recommendations for their next gig.

Are there any supervising bodies, either international or USA-based, who will investigate reports of blatant violations of ethical education practices and help victims receive compensation for unfair dismissal and lost wages?

Ann, thank you for this info! Do you happen to know of any particular organizations doing this kind of work?

Thanks again!

Re: International teaching from Development Context

Hi lastname_Z and PsyGuy..

Thank you for the referral to Rising Academies. I'll check them out.

Peace Corps is not really on my radar, since I'm married with a baby. Although they do have short term placements, but even "short term" is not really feasible, since it would require being away from my family for 6months-1 year. Maybe as my daughter gets older.

I was hoping someone knew of local NGOs on the ground doing this kind of work or a charity that their school works with as part of their service learning efforts.

Any other recommendations are appreciated! Thank you again!

Thank you for this info, finedude. I'm familiar with Affiliated Physicians, but I've never been to their offices in NYC. Will be sure to check them out. Take care.

International teaching from Development Context

Hi everyone. I'm writing to find out if anyone knows of any organizations that hire educators and administrators to train local teachers or write curriculum for underserved children around the world, namely for girls and/or children who live in remote places. Or organizations that send educators to support children's education in refugee camps? I have a strong desire to directly help educate Syrian and Sudanese refugees.

I am an experienced international leader and teacher who has worked in international schools in three countries on three different continents and while I enjoy the perks of international education as much as anyone else, my heart is really yearning for something profound and especially after my last post in Africa, I have come to realize that so much more can be done to help improve local schools and help the most vulnerable children. I would love to do this type of work over the summer and then possibly on a full time basis for next school year.

Thank you in advance!

U.S. Equivalent to comprehensive medical exam offered in BKK

Hi everyone,

I had a terrific experience at Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok for my comprehensive annual physical exam. This summer I will be in the States and am wondering if anyone knows if there is a U.S. equivalent? Thanks in advance!
