Re: question about professional development in intl schools
Quite frankly I'd consider PD to be a downside of the job, not a perk.

Re: Teaching Couple
I doubt most of us are willing to spend 80 hours of our time crafting out cover letters that often don't even get read.

$1,000 a month?
Yeah, that's definitely settling. No, I don't care even if it was your dream location, got you IB experience, and you only had 3 contact hours a week - it's still settling. And settling for something absolutely awful, no less.
How the heck did you even find such an awful job? It'd be hard to actually find a school paying that low.

Re: Teaching Couple
@sid
The problem is that writing an individual cover letter for each school is just completely unrealistic. A candidate might well be applying to 50+ jobs and writing out an individual letter for each one would just take too much time.
I'd say write out a generic letter, and for your dream schools add in a few lines in the body of the text which make it seem like a personalised email. Schools that are just so-so, that aren't your dream but you'd still work there should just get the standard letter with the name of the school changed.

Re: Masters Degree That Is Worth Time/Money?
Plenty of UK unis offer distance learning MA's for £5,000-£7,000. Should pay itself back in around 3-4 years.
If you're British, and can give the address of someone you know in the UK (i.e. family or friends) you can even make a profit off your MA by applying for the £10,000 government postgraduate loan.

Re: Teaching Couple
Don't write a personalised cover letter. It takes way too long given the number of applications you'll likely be making.
Have a standard letter, change the school name, add in a couple of sentences relevant to that specific school. That'll be all you need.

Re: Newbie thoughts on London Fair
All that stress, all that work, all that expense...for something that could be just as easily accomplished with a 30 minute Skype interview.
These fairs are very outdated and I can't see them lasting much longer.

Dating is a big reason to pick EE over WE, for sure.

Re: Teaching in Germany
You can't support a family in Germany on one salary unless your idea of good living is 4 people to a room living on bread and water.
The schools even tell you this themselves on Search.
You get no benefits from those taxes unless you stay 10+ years, it's just money down the drain. Unless you count helping a bunch of Syrian refugees with your money to be a 'benefit'.

Re: American Teacher for Europe
You can't suggest trading WE for EE is the same as trading EE for the ME. While my view that WE is a hardship place seems to be a minority opinion, absolutely everyone agrees the ME is a hardship destination, and few think that about EE.

Re: American Teacher for Europe
Well unless you personally know the recruiter at AIS Bucharest and they've told you there a 16% tax, I don't see how you can state such things with confidence.
Regarding Austria, I don't see why schools in the same city cannot have different compensation packages.
Even if there is a 16% tax on the $51,500 (which there probably isn't), that's still $43,200. https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Bucharest says a 3 bedroom apartment outside the city centre is $420, with utilities been $100 (whereas your 3 bedroom place in Munich is quoted at $1700 with utilities). So chances are you could spend just over $6,000 of that housing alowance and bank the other $13,500. No matter which way you slice this particular cake, it's quite clear which place you'll have more money in. And it's not a bit more money, it's a very significant amount more.

Agreed, you want to be pulling in serious money for the hardship of having to live in that giant cat litter box.

Re: 2017 Fair Diaries?
It's like I said before...recruitment fairs are toxic events and should be avoided. Hopefully some more people have now seen the light.
