Re: IB vs. non-IB as a counselor
As long as it's a strong AP school, I think you should be fine, though, clearly, both those on this forum and many IB school administrators, do like to hire people with previous IB experience. Counseling is somewhat unique; if you are a good counselor you can do a lot of the same good counseling in both IB and AP structures. With that said, if your strong suit is scheduling, IB scheduling is much more complicated than AP scheduling.

Re: Thoughts on Korea, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Israel?
For me, I would only ever consider Korea if the money was insanely amazing. Bulgaria is a dump. Zagreb is quite cute and lovely. Tel Aviv is a real dynamic city, but of course terrorism is omnipresent there. I would only consider Tel Aviv or Zagreb, and then you are essentially deciding between European charm vs. Mediterranean metropolis on the beach. School-wise, it's probably a very small school with lots of locals vs. a good size school with lots of international students. Consider that too.

Uncloudy, good luck to your husband. Would you share the continent of the school you are aiming for this time? Feel free to wait until it's a done deal if your are paranoid/superstitious.

Re: At the fair now... some observations.
And after reading the list of schools attending this fair, I can vouch for the fact that their are at least two sociopath recruiters in attendance as well. Good luck.

Do the one you like better, as long as you have the credential and experience you are good.

Re: Schools contacting you to set up interviews before a SA
As long as everybody reading this forum never looks at Halloween the same way again, I have done my job.
In terms of poisoning the well for the future, there is always that risk, and only time will tell. Luckily, I am set for now, but once I feel the itch again we will see. For the time being, I will live vicariously though all of the current job seekers/recruiters posting here.
Good luck to all forum friends in 2016!

Re: Schools contacting you to set up interviews before a SA
Getting back to the original subject, when I got contacted by a school before a fair it was a school I had no interest in. I usually did give them the courtesy of meeting with them pre-fair if I had the time, but if it was a ME school I would say that I had no interest and not even waste my time. If someone is rushing at you, even if you are amazing, you probably should figure he or she is desperate to land you before you see your other options. My early suiters hailed from Africa, China (turned down), Dubai (turned down), UAE (turned down), and Korea if I recall completely. I enjoyed the pre-fair interviews with the Africa and Korea recruiters, and they got me in the zone for the my serious interviews at the fair with my target schools - interviews I completely aced and which ultimately turned into three job offers - none of which I took, but that is another story...
Also, PsyGuy, thanks so much for mentioning me in the same sentence as a past valuable contributor to the forum. I am honored, and of course, for those enterprising forum searchers, you will find that I created my own yin to Ichiro's yang with an eponymous end-of-fair note to the wayward recruiter who didn't have his priorities straight because, recruiters, don't play with me if you don't want to get played with!

Re: 3Ss - Safety + Savings + Satisfaction
Ukraine has a lot of potential and I agree that it could be one of the best places for a single male teacher; however, for a family or single female teacher, I would expect it to be less enjoyable. It's cheap for people who don't need a lot of comforts and who like to mix with the local socially. But if you want a consumer culture experience, this would not be a place that I would recommend.

Re: Job Fair or not?
I found the London Search Fair completely over-complicated by the organizers and the hotel itself was not very pleasant. That said, I had several interviews, two of which led to job offers. Took neither, and held out for the right fit, which didn't get posted until after the big fairs but was in a better location and paid better than either offer in London. Don't let the recruiters make you settle. Only you can decide what is right for you.

Re: for profit schools - are there exceptions?
There are a few for profit schools and chains that are quite respectable and better than many non-profit schools that have inept leadership. With that said, (school name removed by moderator - we ask you not post school evaluation type material to the forum) I would do your research an demand to speak to several current and former employees - both those provided by the school and those you can contact on your own.

Re: School vision/mission statements
Of course most of these mission statements are a joke. Full of fluff. As most schools are created with great intentions but with ever-transient staff, how could schools' mission statements be anything other than cliches to make the locals happy that they are sending their child to a pricey international or American school?

Re: School Counselor Question
If you are single, that will help a lot in Europe, even with what seems to be a lack of years in the working world. That said, I would question the European school that hired you over a counselor with more years in the field. You have a great foundation for social/emotional counseling, but no college counseling experience, so make sure to focus in on jobs that are purely social/emotional school counseling. Good luck.
