Re: My son has special needs.

A lot of it depends on the parents and them knowing what works for their child....for example, here in Canada we have a lot of assistive technologies used in our resource rooms ie "word Q" which is a program that offers text to speech. International schools have to have teachers that know about the assistive programs out there, and have computer access to them.
A fair number of schools/resource departments ( in Int'l schools) dont have Word Q. ( as an example)
If the parent knows about it, and it works for their kid, they can insist the Resource Teacher become familiar with it, and use it--if they DONT, then a great tool will be left unused, and the child will struggle.
Often, even in Canada parents have to fight for their kid, and the School Board has a duty to accommodate. It is mandated by law. For example, in one school I was at- the whole entrance to the school had to be reworked to accommodate a student in a wheelchair--cost thousands of dollars. Will that kind of support be available to you and your child in an International school? The law here goes a long LONG way in seeing that the kids needs are met. Without the inclusion law--I am not sure where a lot of special needs kids would be at.
So--bottom line--knowing what works for your kid stateside, has to be replicated Internationally--which requires parental involvement and savvy--even stateside some resource departments suck, and some are great--that depends on the teacher, administration and school locale. Same for International Schools.

Re: Is it hopeless to follow an ESOL career?

I am happy that you 'love' teaching ESL and ESOL...if you love something you will be great at it. That speaks volumes. The bottom line is, that most countries with Int'l schools are degree happy. The more degrees that can back up your CV, the better.
By learning support to do you mean 'Resource Teacher"? If so--they get paid the same as classroom teachers. You will need Special Education qualifications for that. ( or equivalent).
Doing what you love is never 'hopeless" in my opinion....:)

Re: Speculative applications/expressions of interest

Yes, me too. I sent out mass applications to schools that I got from SEARCH and schools that were not posted with SEARCH, but that I had their email address and their contact info. for.
The replies ranged from "thanks but no thanks" to Skype interviews.
I liked the comfort of SEARCH--knowing that some schools I was applying for were hiring at least.
I secured an admin post with a job that was posted through SEARCH.

Re: How much math does a high school math teacher need?

Careful there---I for one dont think that being a teacher is in some way "less" than being an academic or professor or inventor etc. Being a great teacher requires a lot of skill, finesse, knowledge and insight. Lets not slam the teaching profession in an effort to win a debate--regardless of how boorish the contender :) This is seguing into the 'those who cant, teach' mindset, me thinks....

Re: How much math does a high school math teacher need?

People have natural talent towards a certain area. Some people lean towards the math/science...some are more creative and lean towards the Arts.
Despite your natural talent, if you dont work hard--you wont get better or grow.
Similar to organized people or not organized people. I am highly organized--its what I do.
It comes easy to me, my kid, on the other hand is extremely unorganized.
Can I teach her to be MORE organized? Yes. Can she memorize how to organize and how to put things back in their place? yep.
Will it come naturally to her? nope.
She will have to WORK at it. I have more potential to be The Queen of Organization because I am naturally inclined that way...my kid will have to work very hard to be Queen--because she isnt. Could she be Queen? Yep...maybe after years and years of practice.....I could make queen in a year or two. Three tops. :)

Can ANYBODY get a Phd in mathematics?
Probably not. Thank god.
Some people have natural math minds, some don't--but either way--it requires work and effort.
To be a teacher of higher order mathematics, without having the background or skill would be very stressful on the teacher--and perhaps do the natural math kid a disservice as that teacher wouldnt necessarily push the student to think bigger and higher.

Re: Lists of International Schools

The 200$ or so that it cost to register with SEARCH was worth its weight in gold for the access to their data base

Pros and Cons for Expat Kid Schooling-kuwait

A friend of mine has moved to Kuwait. He has two school aged children--wants to know where he should send them to school ( he is not a teacher). The campus of American Baccu. School is the best he reports, but the students are mostly Kuwati ( with the mindset that entails, of course) he thinks that perhaps that's too much of a culture shock for the girls.....so--would it be better to go to another school where there are more western kids? What are your thoughts?
