That is a tough one, laws change.
I get an extension every year and when I return in the summer I sign and file. The first year our is a bit more confusing becasue you have to meet the required days out of country and they prorate your USA income for taxes. Just because you got the extension to Jan. doesn't mean you need to use all of it.
I understand that you worked in the USA Jan - July 08 and it will be taxed (Your witholding was based on 12 months so you may be lucky and get $ back). Then Aug-Dec. 08 you worked overseas and don't pay tax when you prove you were out of country. Since Jan 09 you have been qualifying for your bonafide residence which you did. Right?
I don't think you have a reason to wait to file until Jan. 2010 to file your 08 taxes. If you are nervous get a 2nd opinion. $ to a good accountant is so worth it. It will get easier after the first year.
