Enrolling kids in Southern Hemisphere

Post by puka2 »

Hi,
When you move to S. America, starting your job in July/August it is the middle of their school year. How do they determine what grade to put your elementary aged children into? Do they skip 1/2 a year or repeat half a year? Thanks.

Enrolling in kids in South America

It all depends on the country and the school. Many of the schools follow a North American schedule with certain provisions (longer break for Christmas and a shorter June-July break) even when the local calendar has summer vacation starting in November. Some schools have entirely different calendars while the Venezuelan, Ecuadorean, Brazilian and Argentine American International schools follow roughly the U.S. system. My advice would be to contact the individual schools.
Cheers.
