Position Updates/Reposting

Post by Chicagogirl »

When I see positions I applied for reposted/updated on SA, I often wonder why my application was not selected. 17 years teaching experience, 6 years IB international experience, currently working at a "Tier 1" school, no dependents or spouse... I have had a few responses and interviews but whenever I see positions that I know I tick all the boxes, I wonder and sometimes feel a bit frustrated because of the time spent on the applications. Anyone noticing the same?

Lots of reasons, but you can aggregate them down to the category of 'why arent you happy where you are, and what could we possibly offer you that would be an actual benefit to us, instead of just a change of location, better scenery to you'.
The other issue is that while you check X boxes, its a very small number of boxes, and the more important and crucial factor is fit, finding someone youw ant to work with for the rest of their/your career, who is going to fit into the current faculty dynamic, and some of those disqualifying characteristics are just issues of personality.

Have someone else have a look at your cover letter and CV, and ask for feedback. I've read some awful cover letters by superstar teachers, and some CV's look like they were made by a 12 year-old with artistic aspirations.
Your Associate should be able to help you with this (and mine did a few years ago), but I've heard not all Associates are equally helpful, so if yours isn't, ask others (colleagues, perhaps the person who recruited you at your current school) for some pointers.

Also, lots of top schools get so many applications, that there must be loads of great teachers that aren't shortlisted there. You might just be one of them.
