Does anyone know of a good pathway to get certified as a guidance counselor?

I have 2 friends who did it online via Lehigh University. I also have a friend who did hers through Liberty University--a very conservative Christian college, but if you do the work online, that might not matter so much.

There is a program in Colorado that does online courses for school counseling. I think it's Adams State, but I don't know if it's entirely online.

I also know someone who was able to do it through University of Western Alabama while overseas.

The challenge is getting the 600 hours (usually split into 100 hours and a second group of 500 hours) of practical experience. Most people I knew back in the US had to quite their job and spend a semester or two to complete the 500 hour internship. I knew a few who were working in schools who used their free time to complete the hours at the school where they worked.

The fieldwork isnt an issue, just find whatever counseling program you want to do. I would recommend the University of Missouri in the US their 100% online program is $350/credit and their program is only 34 credits (compared to the 45+ you find at many other Unis), making it one of the most reasonable in the US. You then want to apply through DC for the counselor credential as you can use 2 years of IT/DT classroom experience in place of field work.
