If a school is bad, why stay ?

Post by missy »

Just wondeirng as I have noticed that
there was a recent post () about how bad
the school
is YET that same person is still teaching there.
I have seen this happen in other schools as well.
People will complain YET they stay another year!
Why does this happen ?

Fear? Fear of the unknown? Not having a job? Money? Where will they live? Perhaps they are supporting a family and it's not just themselves they have to worry about?
I'm sure there's numerous reasons. Using a forum like this might also be a way of safely 'venting their spleen' - a bit like therapy!!
I stayed at a not so good school for six years in the Middle East - to be honest, it's reputation seems to be worse than it actually was. It wasn't THAT bad!
The reason I stayed was because I LOVED the country, and my colleagues were the BEST colleagues I have ever worked with - we all really lived, worked and socialised amazingly well together - perhaps it's because in the face of adversity, staff stick together!
I still miss the place - not the school per say, but the lifestyle, my friends and the kids I taught were great. It was the admin/owners that were the problem!!

Once as a young teacher in Africa, I was paid by my school to do a Master's degree in a specialist subject. However, I had to sign a contract which stated that I would stay on at that same school for a minimum of two years beyond completion of the degree.

The summer before I finished the degree a new principal was recruited and the school went downhill very quickly. I wanted to leave but couldn't afford to pay back the school the money they had spent on my education, and I had to stick out two very bad years as a result.

By the way, I've also read that post by TTB and from my understanding he / she has only there since August and planning to resign, I imagine at the end of the contracted year (which is fair enough).

I have to say, I do not know anything about Emirate National School. I also don't know how true the comments are about the school. I do know that personality conflicts with multiple staff members can lead to "cliques" being form and little pow wows can exacerbating the situation. However, the same thing an happen if the situation is more than just a personality issue.

I have also read many of your post about the school & Dubai, and I have to say, I am more suspicious of your motives than anyone elses. You have taken on a very combative approach. You need to change your approach.

Pike = I can assure you that there are no motives.
What is tiring is having to read some of the rants that are written in here.
If people do not like a place then they should just leave.
By the way, since you do not know anything about Emirates National School, why bother commenting ?
Maybe you should change your approach !!

CHANGING APPROACHES
Maybe I should Missy! My intention was not to injure you, but to inform you, IMHO, that you may not be as effective as you may think you are. I am sorry you took offense to what, I thought I was being constructive in my criticism.

WHY BOTHER COMMENTING?
I don't think I made any specific comments about ENS at all. I don't intend to. I do not speak on things I do not have specific knowledge. I will, however, comment on other matters if I feel I can make a positive, informative, and/or interesting opinion.

SHOULD YOU STAY OR SHOULD YOU GO?
I think it is important for people to share their thoughts about other schools. It's good to have information, both good & bad, about schools around the world.

Thanks for your thoughts
