Colegio Maya

Post by ISRian »

Hi - I haven't been able to find any recent reviews of the American International School of Guatemala.
Does anyone know anything about it?
thanks

You generally dont see positive reviews, this forum (the paid side) is mostly a dumping ground for complaints and frustrations, so no reviews is about as close as your going to get to a good review (that doesnt guarantee they are good). Maya is a first tier school and arguably the elite tier school in the region.
Admin can be demanding, and what Ive had described as "unfriendly" and "lack of warmth"and while the coin is very good for the area, its not anything to brag about back home, or when leaving. The school is rather nice and well resourced though its got a small student population only a few hundred students for grades K-12. You get to know everyone and everyone knows your business. They dont have IB, but if Guatemala is the place you want to be you arent really going to find a better school.

Thanks, I appreciate it.
I loved Guatemala when I traveled through it. I never really thought of teaching there, but my options are limited. I am currently finishing off my teacher cert/M.ed after teaching ESL in Taiwan for 11 years. I need some international school experience before I can get picky.
thanks again

Youre a noob, if Maya is offering you an appointment it would substantially increase your marketability, you could move to a first tier school elsewhere after your contract.

My thoughts exactly.
I'm curious, though. Why is Maya considered first tier?

Well theres a long answer, an intermediate answer, and a short answer, the short answer is that its the American embassy school in Guatemala. Theres a whole lot that goes into that metric (history, oversight, reputation, assessments, resources, compensation, and a slew of others), and some arguments against (mostly against tier systems in general), and some critical assumptions you have to agree with (mainly that tier status is specific to a region, and isnt a valid comparison across regions).
