Reading Specialist is additional study worth it?

Hello all,

I am a licensed primary educator from the States. I am contemplating pursuing a reading specialist certification or degree to complement my teaching certification.

I wanted to know, if anyone had 1) thoughts about the worth of this additional study (it is very costly), and 2) any recommendation for programmes at a distance.

In the same vein, are there PD opportunities that exist where you can apply and obtain such training and endorsement/certification?

The University of Wisconsin-Stout has an online reading specialist certification program. There were 6 courses I believe and in general they were well worth the effort. It wasn't cheap but I think it was worth it.

That is actually one of the schools I bookmarked! Great, I was just concerned with some of the reputability.

In your experience, do International Schools ever help fund teachers to get additional certification or degrees? Or do teachers have to privately fund it themselves?

I'm fortunate that our school considers coursework as pro-d and thus I have been able to fund a portion of my certificate through the school.
