Do schools hire throughout the holidays?

I'm not very experienced in this and I was wondering: do schools hire throughout the holidays? Do they take a break?

I.e.: If I am not able to secure a job in the next two weeks, should I expect there to be absolute silence throughout Christmas and New Year, or do schools keep interviewing and recruiting throughout the holidays?

Any ideas? Has anyone been hired, say, around Christmas Eve or New Year's eve?

Hey Chemteacher,

I've had a few go-arounds at this and in all this time I may have had one interview over the holidays. Typically job openings and interviews increase in December leading up to the Christmas break. During this time schools are looking to either hire their top candidate(s) or conduct "get to know you" interviews before the Jan fairs. I'm sure some schools do conduct interviews and hire candidates over the break, but again, in my experience this wasn't typical. Therefore, if you haven't had an offer by the third week of December you should plan to attend the Jan/Feb fairs.
