Let's say your goal was to be at a school near decent beaches, (within 1-2 hours) but in a place that wasn't extraordinarily expensive. Where would that be?

Mazapan School, La Ceiba, Honduras. 30 minutes from awesome beaches, islands, rivers, mountains. The fiesta in this city never stops. The country and city is not for the faint-hearted, foreigners are not targeted, but there are tons of bodies lying around. Cool school to work at too if you're a new teacher and looking for a pleaseant small school environment. Cheap as it gets, on a 20K salary you could easily save 10K if you try.

What do you mean 'lots of bodies lying around'? Dead bodies? Lots of people on the beach?

Actually the beaches are nice and empty, but the streets get cluttered with the dead bodies.
Yes, Seinfeld, I will endanger myself for a hammock and a rum/coke :).

American School of Puerto Vallarta is near the beach. Nice town, people, and food. Plenty of waves for water sports.

Cartahenia or Barranquilla Colombia fits your descriptions.

Are you serious? I lived in Colombia and I never saw dead bodies lying around.
But as long as they aren't on the beach I guess its okay.

I agree Sangster about Colombia, but I wasn't talking about that country.
Also agree the beaches of Cartagena and Barranquilla are weak, but at least you can slide down a few hours to Tayrona, they are awesome.

IS Suva is my top pick, though anywhere in Singapore is less then 20 minutes to a beach. Bali is nice too, just stay away from Jakarta.

I know you weren't talking about Colombia. However it is interesting to know that Honduras has dead bodies in the street, whilst Colombia which has the 'worst rep' of the two doesn't. I just didn't expect that.
