Anyone know anything about ESF schools?

Post by mbynum »

I was curious if ESF ever hires anyone from the US?

My husband and I are a good match for a couple of their positions but it appears to be British curriculum though only lists 50% of staff from the UK... We would really like to land in Hong Kong...

Thoughts anyone? Thanks again for all the support this forum has been to us!

Please keep in mind this information is dated by three years, that being the last time I looked into ESF.

1) I am an American with extensive IB experience, but when I applied I was told they only hired people from the Commonwealth. It was a bit frustrating, because I was applying for an IB position, and I didn't think that being an American would be a big deal, but it was.

2) The money isn't what it used to be. ESF teachers are on two separate scales, according to a friend who worked there; when the ESF began they paid large salaries in order to entice people to move abroad. Once teaching abroad became more common, they changed the salary scale; I'm not sure how far the new scale goes in terms of saving money and living well in HK.

I hope this helps!

I am from the US and my experience has been different. I have twice interviewed with ESF over the last 3 years for SPED positions and have been shortlisted for interviews and offered jobs twice.

The first time I didn't take the job as my wife was not offered a position and I was unsure of the financial implications (big mistake).

The second time was this past year and by the time the offer came I had already accepted my current position. The salary quoted would have been enough for my family of 3 to do quite well.

The bottom line is that it doesn't cost anything but an hour of your life to fill out their online application (positions close on Jan. 16) and see what happens. ESF runs many schools and has an excellent reputation (and HK is supposed to be a fascinating place to live). I'm sure I'll be applying again at some point in the future.

Thanks again for the great infor and you are right. I am almost finished with the application so it is worth a try....I would love the position as it is with special education students....

Always appreciate the help and support!
Thanks again.

No problem. I do think that as SPED teachers from the US we have an advantage with ESF over subject specific general education teachers. Everyone knows we're all a bit different anyway.

I think there is a bias towards hiring Commonwealth teachers in my experience and knowing many ESF teachers. Probably being a specialist will curry your favour.
