My wife and I are a teaching couple who have been interested in overseas teaching for sometime...almost took positions in China last year at this time. Ideally, we would like to look for our first posting in a couple of years time, when our son is middle school age. However, due to possible budget cutbacks in our area one or both of us may lose our positions this spring which would push up our timetable. Of course, nobody can say one way or the other until about May.
While I know that most of the premier jobs will be long gone by then, are there still decent positions open in spring? Also, is the Search Assoc. job fair in June worth the trouble? Does anyone have any experience at this fair? Thanks in advance for any input.
Summer Job Fair
I've heard that the Search fair in Bethesda is a nice one to go to. I think it's a bit calmer than the 'mad' scrambles in January and February. Depending on what you teach, there are often schools who have had a late opening, contract cancellation from a previous hire or have simply decided to create a new position. There may not be as many openings as at the bigger fairs, however, schools at that late of a date really need to hire people. So, if there's an opening in your field, why not go for it!
I am certified to teach Business Education 5-12 (Economics, IT, etc.) and Middle School Math/Science while my wife teaches Elementary Ed. In the past, it's the math/science that interested perspective employers. It's good to hear that there may be options that late in the game. Thanks for the response.
I am wondering about people's experience with this fair, too... my understanding is that maybe 30-40 schools go, if I remember correctly... I'm also thinking that this could be the fair where people who are NOT teaching couples (singles, 1 teacher + dependent/s) might have a better chance: if the schools REALLY have to fill the spots and they are the late entries, there might not be the option of having two positions that fit perfectly what the teaching couple offers...
Would I be correct in this?
What have people's experiences been there?
The Hyatt is 120 dollars less a night the night following the fair.
