U of Phoenix
Hello,
I received a Masters degree in education from the UofP three years ago. My program lasted 18 months and I attended classes at a local campus in Tucson. All of the instructors where highly experienced educators and held doctoral degrees in education. I had an excellent experience and would recommend it. If you have any other questions feel free to contact me.

Re: U of Phoenix
Thank you for the input. Soon we will move overseas again and want to get my masters (I have a few years of teaching experience) and would like to get an online masters if we get a posting where I will be unable to teach (due to lack of schools in the area).JScholl wrote:Hello,

However, how often do you have to fly to Tucson to attend class? Can the degree be completed entirely overseas?

cool, thanks. i am in a post-bacc. program currently, but am looking to shave some time off. my concern would be contacts one can get at various schools. like job fairs and whatnot.JScholl wrote:Hi, I was actually living in Tucson at the time and didn't do any of my program online. It was all at the campus and was more of a traditional program. I'm not sure sure about the online program but I don't think you would need to travel at all to do it.
i saw that UoP has contacts for overseas student teaching, with the Dept of Defense. anyone have contact or exp with somehting like this?
master's degree
Greetings,
University of Phoenix has had a good reputation. I am not persoanlly familiar with it but I do have some suggestions to add to the discussion.
There is also Capella University which is a North Central Accredited insitution that has both master's and doctoral degrees. I presently teach for Capella and have been extremely pleased with the framework and the valuing of learners.
I also would suggest you consider looking into the master's Degree in Teaching that Framingham State College International Programs provides to many of the international schools. In fact, many Directors use this two year program to entice new teachers, often offering to pay at least half of the tuiton, which is extremely affordable...and much, much cheaper than many universities in the states. I also teach for Framingham and have found it to be very student centered.
So, it may be that you would want to wait to get that Master's when you are in an international school.

I teach at an international school in Bangkok, and I enrolled in the University of Phoenix on-line Master's of Education program in Curriculum and Instruction in March of 2004 and completed the program in July of 2005. I doubled-up on courses some months because I wanted to finish as quickly as possible to get a raise. The admissions counselor and academic counselors were wonderful! They would call me periodically to see how I was doing. My Master's degree did allow me to renew my teaching credentials in Oregon. However, you need a very reliable Internet connection because everything is done on-line. No trip back to the US for classes. The only drawback is that every class requires individual as well as group work. Individual was a piece of cake, but the group work could sometimes be frustrating because if one person in your team didn't pull their weight, it could affect your entire grade. Most of my classmates were in the US and being in Southeast Asia I was usually ahead of them 10-15 hours. This could sometimes prove to be a disadvantage, but what else could I do?
However, it was still a wonderful way to get my Master's. Several other teachers at my school have completed their advanced degree with UOP with just as positive results. I recommend UOP highly.
