One thing I have found in my many years is that very little surprises me anymore. Anything that can happen, will happen, and probably already has. Eventually someone does win the lottery, but expectation and devastation are two sides of the same coin. Im sure you can look at the comments provided and parse what is realistic from the fantasy.

For what it's worth, I'm at my first IT job in Belgium. I'm an American teacher, had a Master's and 5 years experience. I have a trailing spouse as well. I agree with looking at the fringe--I have a friend in Eastern Europe with a far better overall package than us.
