Looking into International Teaching...Advice?

A couple I know was in a similar situation when moving to a top school in Shanghai. They were told if they had a marriage certificate, they could be hired as a couple. Since their home country is enlightened, they went home over the summer and got "hitched".

One side of me is pleased to see the Asian countries being so progressive; the cynical side says that as they process the wedding certificates for the visas, they can't tell the sex by the name so pass it through like any other (as it should be.)

Mathman: I think you could benefit from re-reading my original post. I am not looking to bring a trailing "girlfriend." I am looking for information on the likelihood of schools hiring a gay couple who are BOTH teachers. Some of the countries I could teach in DO allow gay marriage while much of the US does not. That definitely creates some interesting scenarios.

Thanks everyone else for the feedback. I'm feeling more confident about our options as a gay couple and am looking forward to starting the application process. We don't plan on hiding anything about ourselves and just want to be considered for our skills. Any more hints and suggestions would be most welcome!

For what its worth I hope you dont encounter any issues at all. I honestly think teaching couples make better teachers from an admin point of view. Spouses are seldom reluctant to comment on their spouses behavior, and as an admin I have backdoor access to a teacher before an issue becomes a problem. New teaching couples also bring their own support system that "understands" what its like being a teacher.

I only know of one time a school sponsored a trailing girlfriend, other then that it doesnt happen.
