Recruitment Fair

Post by PsyGuy »

So I'm sorry to post this late but found out I will be going to the Bangkok/ISS fair with another VP to do recruiting for our school. The problem is were not allowed to hire anyone, offer a contract or discuss a contract. This puts me in an uncomfortable position, of going through the motions and wasting candidates time with an interview that could be put to better use. I cant however be upfront about it, because it will effect negatively our image and our relationship with the recruiting agencies.

Anyone have any advice?

Were prohibited with a strict directive not to disclose our hiring authority. I can only imagine its a Search/ISS thing.

Id share but id be shooting in the dark. I just got the email today. We have three principals but none of them are going??? My guesses are:

1) Were a municipal school (a tier 2 school). We pay $25K Crowns a month salary (no matter how much experience you have), relocation expenses (airfare, temporary housing in a hotel for a month, and about $5K Crowns in cash), State social benefits (medical, dental, retirement, etc). Free tuition for all children. Were not really the type of school that experienced teachers at BK are looking for.

2) We dont know who we really need for next year. Teachers arent required to give notice until June 1.

I dont know why they would send two of us if one of us cant really do anything. I was told to come by the commission office on Monday to pick up my tickets and a credit card. My flight leaves Monday evening.

I suppose thats the reason for my post: if anyone has some insight into "why" or advice on what to do, id appreciate it...

Someone clearly does not realize how un-Scandinavian it is to waste that much carbon.

Sounds like they are basically sending you on a fishing expedition (or intel gathering in the form of putting faces with names for a candidate pool if that sounds better). You could be honest enough to say that all positions are tentative at this point, which side steps the issue of your hiring authority.

Let's try and get together for a drink.

Seems like a lot of money to spend on a fishing expedition.

Two ideas of why might be....

The school has to show up at a certain amount of job fairs to be active with the recruiting agencies.
The school thinks it looks good on the international circuit if they are represented at the big Asian fair.

As a teacher... Just be upfront about salary and the fact that your school will not be offering contracts until after the fair. What you didn't say is how much the upper admin will listen to you and your colleague when you get back.

Best of luck.

Confusion

Post by PsyGuy »

Never mind HR was confused, were going to Australia. As you can imagine the PYP and DIP Principal's are going to ISS and Search in Bangkok.
