Looking for advice..newbie!

Post by miscitch »

13 years teaching in Public school in S.E. Michigan. I want to try and advance myself and apply for overseas postings. The cuts to education have been so dramatic. No longer feel like I am teaching but just a room to pack as many kids.
Here is my website with Resume, photos, letters, video.
I am single 47 male. Looking for S.E. Asia maybe China and good locations in the Gulf.
Any and all advice is appreciated.

Hi

Im sorry I couldnt review your page (network blocking of some kind). If your serious you really need to look at either Search Associates or International School Services. They run the big job fair recruiting events for international educators. the UNI fair is actually kind of small game compared to them.

Seriously, you just send your cover letter and resume by email to schools your interested in. You will probably be picked up pretty fast.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. The UNI fair is an excellent fair, where I have gotten two great jobs. I have also been to ISS fairs, including Bangkok where I also got a job, and in my opinion UNI has just as much to offer especially for those teachers testing the waters or can't make the time or financial commitment to attend another fair. Its also a great fair for those applicants who don't quite meet Search or ISS's selection criteria.

Disagreement

Post by PsyGuy »

"Many things are true, including that people disagree on what is true"...

While you have some valid point, regarding the UNI fair being viable for very entry level teachers to the field, in this case they really dont apply. First, the OP easily exceeds Search's and ISS's standards, and in this case the OP is a highly qualified and experienced teacher.
Second, the OP is in Michigan and in this case its going to be a significant travel expense to go to Iowa as much as it would to the ISS/Search fairs in Mass. The UNI fair isnt going to be any cheaper.

Lastly, were going to just have to disagree. When it comes to job fairs the ISS/SA Mass. super fair is the better bet. Any school at UNI will either: 1) be at the SA/ISS fair, 2) Already hired all their staff, 3) Arent worth working for.

Your website is very impressive and I think your chances are very good, but you need to get started right away! Join tieonline.com as it is just $39 and lists many of the job openings worldwide. Then, start applying directly to the schools. Best of luck and please share where you end up!

Have sent out a few C.V. what are best school fits for me

Post by miscitch »

TIE did not have many listings for what I want. Middle School Science..I like blowing stuff up! LOL And no I am not a fired teacher for blowing up a classroom. Tired of the B.S. going on in education. My pay cut was 38% this year and will be an extra cut of 5-8% next year. Class size is through the roof and it is no longer teaching. Oh and I teach in a wealthy district!
So a short list...
Good school with good housing and a wage where I can start saving for my retirement. Would have to allow some creative freedom in teaching.
Is that too picky? LOL
Psy guy try my site again...really respect your opinion. And everyone else's!

Miscitch, I got my first job at UNI and thought it was a very well-run fair. There were excellent schools there as well as less-well-known ones that probably can't afford to do the Search or ISS fairs. The directors I met on the puddle jumper were friendly and generous with advice for my first fair; the whole atmosphere was very collegiate. The schools there seem ready to hire on the spot.

Boston sounds good but it seems the early bird gets the job. It also seems that Skype interviews are the method of use for many of these schools. I have sent out over 20 letters and hope to see some returns after the new year. Will send out an extra 5 today! Really not picky on location....anyplace is better than Detroit area and the collapse of the public schools. Psyguy did you get a chance to look at my site? Thanks!

Site looks great.

You'll do fine at a fair but if you want to get a head start then look at school websites in areas that you want to live. Just google international school any city and you'll get a list. Email them your site and resume and cover letter.

Best of luck... if you are that good with tech you'll get offers.

Not Really

For instance the Bangkok search fair is next week, and aside from teaching couples and very competitive teacher candidates, many schools like to "wait and see" for the Boston fair, that's doesn't mean you should wait. Many teachers get offered positions without ever having set foot in a fair.
