What are my chances?

Post by john_e »

Hi everyone. I apologize if this should be posted somewhere else. If so, let me know and I'll move it.

My wife and I are hoping to land a decent job in SE Asia for the 2012-13 school year. We would like to work in a larger city near the ocean, and we don't want a job in a school that gets poor reviews on ISR. Money isn't all important, but we don't want to be completely living paycheck to paycheck. Some of the cities we're interested in are Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, or Manila.

My question is what are our chances of getting what we want? Here's an overview of our qualifications:

Age: John (31), Heidi (34)

Teaching experience: John (5 years public school), Heidi (6 years public, 3 years private)

Licenses: We both hold Colorado professional teaching licenses

Subjects sought: John (drama or counseling) Heidi (elementary or ELL)

Advanced degrees: John - MA Theatre Education & M.Ed. Guidance and Counseling, Heidi - M.Ed. Elementary Education & Graduate certificate Teaching English Language Learners

IB Experience: None (but I would attend a MYP or DP theatre training in Florida in June if it helped my chances)

Thank you for taking the time to give me your feedback!

Hi. You certainly could have a shot at a good/decent school in SE Asia (near the ocean could be slightly harder to come by). Is your experience primarily in counseling or drama? There have been a large number of counseling positions posted this year, for some reason.

I have pondered this, Ill start out with the easy parts.

IB training is not the same as IB experience. Schools want IB experience, they dont care so much about you having an independent training workshop/seminar.

There is a pretty good demand for certified counselors this year, unusual actually. Sadly, Drama/Theater doesnt have much demand at all, (this year there are currently 38 Drama positions, but the majority of them are in the Middle East/india).

So based on your preferences and criteria (big city, near the ocean, getting a southern tropical vibe going from you) the following vacancies with positions for both you and your wife are available:

International School Manila - Philippines
Drama (High School)
ESL/ESOL (Elementary School)

International School of Kuala Lumpur
Counselor (High School)
Elementary 1-3 (age 6-8) (Elementary School)
