Special Education Credentials

Post by mbynum »

I am trying to cover all bases when applying for jobs. I am a masters level elementary teacher and have a national board certification. I also am a certified speech therapist. Do you think that I should also be applying for special education positions?
I do not have the actual special ed teaching credential but I have taught in the regular classroom and been a speech therapist with special education students. I also have loads of ESL experience. My husband is a computer technology teacher so we are applying as a couple and it seems we are going to have difficulty matching up with a school that will have a position for both of us. I am looking for ways to expand our field a bit.
Please is there anyone out there that can ease my anxiety!!!
Thanks so much for this forum. It has been great and I hope this time next year I can offer helpful advice and pay back for some of the great info I have gleened from others.....

Are you signed up with Search? There have been some interesting SLP postings recently.

You may as well apply for SPED positions. Some schools may demand certification in that field, but I would say that many would be willing to look past it, given your certification in Elem., your SL and your experience. There are also like 50+ SPED jobs posted in Search right now (including SPED and SLP at some really top schools). If they want you as a couple then they will make it work.

Good luck!

Sorry for the late response - I'm an Occupational therapist and an elementary teacher - I hadn't thought of applying for special ed positions but mentioned to a school about applying for a learning resource position and they were very interested. Did you have any luck? There are so many spec. ed jobs listed I'm wondering if it's a good time to try to get in as an OT or SLP.

good luck!
