I think I struck oil...

Post by deerjust »

When starting the search for international teaching jobs, I had few leads. The job fair in Iowa was about all I found. Then, given a bit more time, I stumbled upon this site and a wealth of others.
All the posters here seem so helpful, so I thought I'd ask some advise. I am certified to teach high school math, and have a master's in secondary ed curriculum and intructional design.
Lol... I'm just going to list some questions. feel free to answer any or all. :)
1. What is the best conference to go to?
2. Should I even waste time and money on the conference?
3. What time of the year should I give up if I can't find emplyment overseas?
4. How is it possible to discern the good from the bad schools?
I'm sure I'll think of some more questions after I submit this, so I'll post them in a reply later.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and help me with my concerns.
Regards,
Justin

My two cents

1. The conference kind of depends on a few things. If you want best pay (ie china or korea or middle east) I think the Bangkok fair is best. Check fair list for each fair and see which schools go to what fairs – different fairs for South America, et al. To me - for SURE a fair - shows the commitment of the school to excellence. The 2nd Bangkok fair, though, is typically newer (ie not as safe a bet I'd think, smaller, less money less well known) schools.

2. Go to fairs? I think YES. Heres why. It’s a lot of money for sure – but you meet many many other teachers and can learn from their experiences. Too – its valuable to meet/see the schools. Mostly though – (sounds not applicable to you) but if you’re already abroad in a country and take a post – you wont get the benefits you would if they hired you – same person – outside the country – ie flights home for you and fam, housing, et al. and other perks.

3. No clue. I go with – never never never give up! Theres international sub webs/groups as well….

4. Here, this website, word of mouth….can write to teachers currently working ....dont know the best answer here - maybe someone else will.

hope that helps some. best of luck!
