Schools that Don't Hire Certain Nationalities

Post by reisgio »

As this is not a review as much as a factual statement, I am wondering if those responding to this thread can provide names of schools that you know for a fact simply don't hire certain nationalities. For instance, International School of Paris will simply not hire you if you don't have the right to work in France or EU Nationality, "It is essential for all applicants to hold a nationality of one of the European Union countries, or valid French working papers."

Yet, not all schools will state this so explicitly on their websites, but you may know that it's the policy just the same. What schools or school groups just won't hire which nationalities?

Schools in Qatar currently won’t hire anyone from a country participating in the blockade. And vice versa. Likewise Russia and Ukraine. I suspect Venezuela is not considering Germans at the moment, but that’s just a guess and there are probably other countries on their list anyway. Some schools in the EU have sworn off British nationals until there’s clarity re Brexit, visas and reciprocity. Plenty more though there’s unlikely to be a definitive list. Sometimes there’s an actual written ban by law or the school’s choice, but often it’s just unwritten and true anyway.

SE and East Asia are probably the most racist. Majority of schools in Thailand, S.Korea, Taiwan, and Japan will not hire Asian teachers even if they have a Western degree and certification. It's all about having the right skin which is these schools USP. Diversity is simply a punchline in their mission statements, hardly translates into reality. Did I mention Singapore loves Brits? Old school colonialists still live amongst us. A dim-headed teacher at lunch mentioned today that to be a successful musician, you need to be good-looking. No wonder the island is drifting far from the rest of the world.

Agree with @fine dude that skin color is an issue for some schools, more than nationality I think. Chinese for-profit schools are the worst from what I've heard, but I don't have any data to back that up. I've heard of schools where they'll take a Caucasian inexperienced candidate over a Chinese-American candidate with lots of experience and outstanding references. I've seen a school brochure from one of these school where the one Caucasian kid (staff dependent) managed to 'accidently' wind up in all but one of the school photos. "Look, here's picture of five of our Chinese high school exam class students playing basketball with a 10 year-old white kid."
Of course some countries might only allow teachers from English-speaking countries (US, UK, Australia, NZ, SA and one or two others), or have political motives in excluding certain nationalities. Not sure what happens if you're already employed, and then a country's policy changes in a way that would exclude you. Would you be asked to leave when your visa needs to be renewed? I assume so.
