renting in Cairo

Post by jillbeaulieu »

I am starting my international teaching career with a job at AIS in Egypt. Wondered if anyone had experience with renting furnished apartments in Heliopolis or Maadi areas - the recruiter suggested these would be most likely choice for me. The school offers paid but shared housing that does not interest me or the option of 3000 EGP toward renting my own place. Anyone got a suggestion on what I could expect to find for an apartment for that money, or what I would need to augment that sum with to find a nice place to live?
Thanks

Maadi and Helio both have their pluses and minuses. I am pretty sure you will have to supplement how much you pay - how much depends upon where you want to live and how nice your apartment has to be. The low end seems to be around 3000 LE and the higher end seems to be around 6000 LE a month. There are buses to/from school for both Maadi and Helio so transportation is not really an issue. Maadi seems to be a little bit more expensive.

There is a great debate as to which one to pick from - Helio seems to be more "Egyptian" and Maaid has more expats. That's an oversimplification, I know, but in general that is how many see it. Personally I think that both are pretty neat.

When you arrive in country, the school will take you around to both areas and help you pick out an apartment, let you know where the buses pick up, and all kinds of other info.

renting in Cairo

I second what specialed said, and have a suggestion. Get a map of Cairo and think about how far from the school you are willing to live. The bus ride (though the buses are nice) can be loooooong. If you are thinking of far away from New Cairo, then consider the trade offs. Is there something near the flat that is just fantastic to live near? Is it a spectacular view, or unbeatable deal? If not, look closer.

best wishes to you there, it is a wonderful place to be . . .

This forum is used by folks who need relevant information about a place in the world. Someone using the search engine to find discussion about Cairo would find this post useful and mostly pertinent to any school in the city for years to come. The previous post will be outdated when we have flying buses, and the commute is no longer an issue. I am happy to share what I have learned whenever I can.
