Trailing Spouse with Dual Citizenship
I've got a non-teaching spouse and 2 kids. I know this lowers my prospects considerably right up front. However, I'm specifically looking for a position in Kenya, and my husband and children have dual citizenship in Kenya and the U.S. Do I have a chance? I'm a middle school English teacher with a Masters and a library science or media specialist licensure. I've been teaching for 15 years. I've done my research surrounding dependents and international teaching positions. It seems outside of the Middle East that anything more than 2 dependents just isn't marketable. I can't find anything about positions in Kenya. It seems in Tanzania they accept families, but most schools I've seen state that they don't accept non-teaching spouses. I'm concerned about starting the process and getting my husband's hopes up. Of course, there's also the time and money invested in the actual search. Any insight is welcome. Thanks!

Sadly, I agree. You're probably going to be considered local hire due to strong ties to the country.

Never hurts to try. I teach in East Africa currently. I too have a trailing spouse and two children. I'f you aren't too picky about where you teach, there are options out there. TZ is not far from Kenya, so maybe expand your search to surrounding counties around Kenya. We really like the school and lifestyle here. I too was warned about being an expensive hire, yet I got a job the first year I searched. Good Luck!

Thanks for the replies. I do think I'm just going to give it a try.
