I have lived overseas in many places but all before having a son and I wasn't teaching then. I'm getting discouraged reading the somewhat dated reviews in Latin America (my first choice since I'm already a Spanish reading teacher.) Also, I'm wondering whether I should plan to wait until my 2 1/2 year old is of school age rather than having to hire a nanny or finding a preschool for him. I can't afford the time or money to attend the job fairs so I'll only be applying directly to schools with posted openings. Any advice from veteran teachers?
P. S. I have a master's in science education and 10 years of experience at the elementary level teaching self-contained, reading in grades K-4 and also doing environmental education. I speak fluent Spanish and used to be fluent in French. (It would come back w/ a little immersion, I'm sure.)
Thanks,
Shari

Hi
Brunei offers very good conditions for Primary teachers in government schools. Great for single parents! Lots of cheap, good childcare available and short teaching hours...
You can email me if you wish to discuss further -I have direct experience of this!

I have always gotten top-tier schools and I'm a single mom. I'm currently working at such a school and already have some interviews lined up with others at next month's job fair. In fact, I got an offer from a top-dog school after a two-hour skype video interview just the other day that I'm seriously considering even though I'm still going to the fair. I honestly think it just depends on your qualifications and experiences, as well as how well you interview. No one ever pauses or thinks twice when I bring up my kid. Instead, they are excited to tell me how their particular school would fit his personality. So definitely don't get discouraged. Before I entered international teaching, I worried about this, just like you. But it's never been a problem.
You just have to be the most desirable candidate ever, and they won't care at all that you've got a dependent. PM me if you have further questions.
