Now or next year?

Post by McC »

I realise I may be late to the show this year but I am looking to secure a first overseas position. I have registered with TIE and look regularly on TES but was wondering if it was worth signing up to search still? I am a geography specialists and there are only a few jobs on tie at the moment. Are there liky to be many more listed on search and is it worth attending the April fair in London or realistically should I be looking at next year now? Thanks for any insight.

Hello. Strictly Geography positions are always going to be relatively few and far between compared to History/Social Studies/Geography combination positions (Approx. 10 vs 40 on Search right now).

If you are serious about it, I would join Search now. Membership is good for 3 years and you would be in a position to jump on anything this year and/or be fully prepared for next year's recruiting cycle. I'm not sure if it would be worth it for you to attend a fair if you are interested only in Geography Specialist positions (unless you had had communication with several schools that had those openings and had demonstrated an interest in you).

I agree with wrldtrvlr123, the big subject is history and while there are geography positions if thats ALL your going to teach your really going to limit yourself. Many ISs want social studies/humanities teachers that can step in and teach it all. There will never be a lot of geography only positions on SA or ISS, but at they will be convenient and easy to find.
I cant say a fair would really be in your interests, unless one was local to you it would be a lot of expense to essentially go for 1 maybe 2 positions, and since you have to register for those fairs well in advance, you may find yourself often in the position of scheduled to go to a fair that when you get there has no geography positions.

Social studies teachers are not in high demand, if you want to be marketable your going to have to expand your expertise to include a wider range of social studies.

Now or next year? Yes. Go for it, don't take any old crap, and if it doesn't happen there's always next year. Also, it sounds like you are in your "home" country and that you can resign late anyway - so why be anxious? Sign up with Search, as others suggest, and see how it goes -it will cost you zilch if you are in the UK.

And yes it is worth attending the April fair in London because it will tell you clearly where you stand. And geography? There are plenty of jobs, don't believe the hype otherwise.

No there arent, the best source of Geography specific jobs is TES, and if that isnt working SA and ISS arent going to be better. The only thing (and I recommend it) is that it will make the job Search much more convenient.

The April LON fair like all the dump fairs will tell you nothing. Anyone can pretty much can an invite to the dump fairs.
