tourist police

Hello, Has anyone had dealings with the tourist police in Egypt. I recently attended and wedding and was told by family of the wedding . that I had to go to the police station. They were polite enough, but they stamped my passport so that it now says that I was in a police station. I just wondered if this is "normal" Thanks for your replies.
