ISS Philadelphia

Post by anlily »

Hi all--

I'm currently deciding whether to register for the ISS Philly conference or hold off until next year. I'm sure some of you out there have been to this conference and I was just wondering what the selection of jobs is like.

I'm a specialist and have been told by reliable sources (other people in my specialty) that there tend to be more jobs than people applying in my specialty. But being the end of the hiring season I'm wondering how many of these jobs still will be left?

I am single, so there will be no worrying about finding a job for a partner and have no other obligations other than to my student loans. However as just mentioned I do have to worry about adequate salary to cover my expenses here in the US and a medical condition that does not affect my ability to work.

So, Philadelphia and end of the season job conferences...are there still a good amount of 'decent' jobs out there or will it be slim pickings?

And, if you had to do it again would you have waited a year and just gone to the winter conferences or still done Philly?

Thank.

Yes, I'd say go for it!

You're in a fantastic position to negotiate at the summer Philly fair. I went to it and had many offers and finally got a great contract from a fantastic A+ school. I even drove my future boss to the airport after the fair! I lived in Philly at the time!

Good luck. It's definately worth it if you are single and available and would be flexible about where you move. The only thing (which isn't related to the fair) is getting hired that late in the year might affect your present position, if you've already agreed to return in Sept '07. Also, the marathon speed-packing paperwork nightmare is far less fun in June than in Feb!!

summer fair

You don't say what kind of specialist, anlily, but you might be able to get an offer without going to a fair - at this time of year, if schools are still in need of a specialist, they will need to get someone hired - perhaps via phone call or video conference. (Most would rather NOT go to a fair during their limited time off in the summer.) You can check openings out through tieonline or joyjobs and contact schools directly. If you are looking for some rather limited openings, don't sit back and wait for a fair - although it is a good fallback option, and by summer fair time- if a school has an opening and you match it - chances are great. You do mention medical difficulties - that will limit your options to openings in countries which both have openings AND which can meet your needs.

Thank you Goddess and Scribe for your replies.

Scribe-I do *edited as I don't know whose reading*. TIE lists a fair number of jobs still there for my specialty. I have been doing some applying that way, to a mixed responses. I'm hoping this week to send out some applications as I'm on vacation.

In terms of the medical condition, what I'd need to treat it is fairly common world wide, so I guess I'm not too worried. As it doesn't affect my work I'm determined not to let it affect where I go too much.

Goddess- Are you more specialty or general? That's great to know that there are still some good schools.

Thanks both for your replies...I'm really trying to decide whether to hold on for another year or move on!

Librarians Wanted

Post by beenthere »

You should know this was a good year to be a librarian wanting a job. I received multiple job offers and more than one director commented that there was a dearth of librarians available. I am sure that there is a position out there with your name on it.

Figures that I got my act together slightly too late to go to the job fairs!!!

Anlily,

I was in the same situation 2 years ago, but don't fret. I got 3 job offers. Keep checking different job boards - CIS if you're registered, TIE Online (if you're registered, or the Times Educational Supplement which is a free service).

Good luck.
