search bio

Post by sevarem »

Finishing up my Search application and I've hit the bio section. Looking to hear from people who have done this already. What should I really put in the bio? What do they actually want to know that isn't on my resume?

Severam,

While SighGuy is correct that people have asked about it recently, as one who asked, I still don't think it is all that clear about what is desired. I ended up emailing my associate and to be honest, the response wasn't much better at clearing up the issue for me. You might find it worthwhile to email your associate; assuming it is someone different you may receive a more worthwhile response than I did.

What people said on the forum, that was reinforced by my associate's response is that they are not looked at closely by many recruiters. It can be an introduction prior to an interview, but it sounds like it is less important than the other parts of the application and far less important than the interview.

Someone mentioned demonstration of teaching style. Another person mentioned classroom management and philosophy of teaching. I'm not a classroom teacher, but I did focus on my "philosophy of counseling" for my bio section. If nothing else, it gave a sample of my writing which comes into play for college recommendations I would write as a counselor.

Good luck. I think the bio section is poorly explained on the part of SA.

I agree, I wish they would just call the Bio section what it is, and thats a place to actually include text, call it the notes, or essay, or whatever section. So much of the application is either very specific (name, etc) or uses drop down boxes. Except for the Bio section there really isnt a place to explain, describe, refine or go into deeper depth about some aspect of your resume that may get you hired or give a recruiter reason to take interest. At the very least they could mention that the Bio section is optional.

Its not a priority for Search though to better label or name the section, because its not a section that is looked at very often by recruiters. They just dont have time to read everyones narratives.

Bio should be what is not in your resume. It is not to talk about how much you love to travel either. I recommend
- why you want to be a teacher
- what makes you effective
- what your career and life goals are
- anything in particular you would like to work on for PD maybe
- maybe a little story from your teaching that really touched you

Use to show how you are different. Your confidential referees will take care of competence, or excellence, whichever it may be.
