Teach Now Masters Program/online M.Ed

Post by WinterFerret »

Previously, the Teach-Now program has been discussed as a pathway for becoming a licensed teacher, it is a 9 month program but also offers a 12 month masters program. The 12 month program was also considered garbage because it's a masters degree from a non-university that wasn't accredited. This has changed, it's now accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission.

a) Can the Teach-Now program be consider d a 1-year masters program that leads to certification? Would there be any reason to consider the 9-month certification only pathway outside of cost when the 12-month program awards a masters degree?

b) Does DEAC legitimize the M.Ed, does it now count as a pay step increase in the U.S and overseas, and would it be valid for the 30+ credit hours required for the California CLEAR?

c) How would the reputation hold out, schools like to advertise the universities that their teachers received their degree at when it's a reputable school. How would a degree from Educatore School of Education hold out compared to other online masters program? (open discussion here, I don't think I've ever seen a profile that included a masters from Phoenix or Walden or Western Governors)

The Distance Education Accrediting Commission isnt a regional accrediting authority (IE. WASC) which are the ones that matter. The regional accrediting associations also accredit online programs so the argument that they arent appropriate is false. The Educator School degree isnt likely to be accepted by a regionally accredited tertiary institution.

1) Sure, you receive a piece of paper that says Masters of Education on it and it took you a year so sure its a one year Masters.

2) Your paying twice as much for essentially a self accredited degree and a transcript of mostly non-transferable and acceptable credits. At least academically.

3) No its essentially self accreditation. Would it count for STEP, maybe depends how close and how defined the ISs/DSs requirement are. The majority of DE will not accept a degree earned in the US issued by a non-regional accrediting body. Would it be recognized in IE, more likely in third tier and less likely as you move up tiers. You will also see a difference in utility between an AS and other non-AS ISs

4) No, CA does not accept degrees or credits earned at institutions that were not earned from regionally accredited institutions. You can find the accepted list here:
http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/accre ... odies.html

5) Rather poorly, no one who goes to look at The Educator School of Education is going to confuse it with a college or uni, and no ones going to be impressed by it. It will give you a line item on your resume and maybe a band increase, and a couple letters after your name for USD$6K and 3 months of additional academic work (which isnt very difficult work). Thats the only real advantage of the program, its only 3 months extra work.
