Cash? Or virtual?

If you have a bank account in Hong Kong with which to transfer the money - https://transferwise.com

You won't be able to beat them for value in terms of digital transfers.

Well virtual or cash... But I suspect it would not be wise to take upwards of $10,000 CAD in cash ahah- So I should go to HK, open a bank account then virtually transfer my money? I could of course take a smaller amount in cash for the first few weeks.

Carry some cash. Make sure your bank will let you access more cash via your cards. Transfer the rest virtually when you have an account.

I would bring enough coin or currency instruments to handle a months living expenses, and then once you arrive in HK you can open an account and go though the process of verifying your access to the accounts and then wire or digitally transfer additional funds as you deem appropriate.
