Quickest elementary certification?

Post by TeacherGal »

I am certified to teach high school social studies but have only taught elementary abroad for many years. What is the quickest way to have elementary 1-6 certification from USA, Canada preferably, otherwise UK, Australia, New Zealand?

Where are you currently certified from?
What was your EPP/ITT program/academic preparation (degree)?

I'm surprised you are only certified for certain subjects. In BC the certificate is general K-12.

Anyway, you should look into getting UK QTS. It took four weeks and was free, except for having my transcripts sent from Canada to the UK.

Well CAN is a non starter not unless you want to go back to Uni. AUS isnt much different (its different but not in any way that helps).

The fastest is the UK and apply for QTS. Takes two weeks at most, no fees, and a simple application. The problem is that depending on your need QTS is NOT subject and grade level specific. QTS says you've been trained as a professional educator, it has little (some) specificity in regards to subject and grade level. In regards to that specificity I doubt youd be granted teaching fields in primary. It is however fast, and would legally permit you from a technical position to provide primary instruction. Its also a lifetime credential. Whether that suits your needs is another matter.

In the US (Im assuming you have 3 or more years of experience) the best option would probably be to apply through the state of Hawaii the reasons being:
1) Theres no CRB requirement:
2) HI uses the Praxis exam which you can take globally.
3) There is little risk, your application would be evaluated and youd be informed of the result before you paid any fees.

The process starts with getting an NACES evaluation of your transcripts and Ontario credential. At the same time youd want to register for the PRAXIS exam you will need two exams: 1) 5001 Elementary Education and 2) 5622 PLT K-6. Hopefully both will be done around the same time. Once thats done you send in your application and supporting documents (essentially the experience verification sheet). Hawaii will likely award you certification in 6-12 Geography and PE and with the PRAXIS exams K-6 Elementary. This would be the standard 5 year credential unless you have 8 years experience in which case you would receive the 10 year advance credential.

What does QTS certify you for? What is the expiration date? Thanks.

QTS is Qualified Teacher Status. It is not grade or subject specific, you would technically be credentialed to teach anything including primary. Practically however your QTS profile has teaching fields that include details of what you are approved to teach, based on your degree and academic preparation. While in UK maintained DSs you could teach anything a DS would have significant and major issues assigning a DT outside of their approved teaching fields. In IE this is only an issue at Ofsted inspected BSOs.

QTS has no expiration date, it is a lifetime credential that never needs renewing, nor is their an obligation to complete PD requirements. QTS as awarded for OTT (Overseas Trained Teachers) have full QTS and are not required to undergo induction.
