Teach Away

Post by senator »

Anyone ever hear of this company? Their salaries - as stated - for Abu Dhabi are 5500 -6000 USD/month. Not bad.

Thanks for any information.

I have used them as a recruiter. They are a legitimate company. They connect teachers and schools for Skype interviews although they partnered with ISS this year in two recruiting fairs. Their model to is screen candidates and then refer candidates to schools.

While they have expanded to more traditional international schools, their first big contract was hiring for local schools in the UAE, which provide traditional OH packages. Do your homework and make sure it is the type of school where you would enjoy working.

They are scammy. They are one of those agencies whose goal is to fill the staffing holes in a schedule. ISs and ESs and DSs that have problems with recruiting use them to find warm bodies. Yes, they work with ISS, ISS gets candidates that just arent worth the resources to repp.

Thanks Psyguy.

They advertise on Schoolspring for math teachers at an Abu Dhabi vocational school. At this stage of my career I am just looking to work a few years and save one last bundle before either retiring or working part-time overseas.

They list salary as 5500-6000 USD a month. I would have ZERO problem of leaving the school if it turned out to be sketchy.

So, the question becomes: Does Teach Away pay well and do they always pay salaries on time? The school will be what it will be.

Thanks again for any help.

They don't pay you anything, they're just an agency trying to pair you with schools they have on their books.

Teach Away doesnt pay anything. They are a placment service, an agency that takes low tier ISs, DSs and ESs that have difficulty recruiting and scrapes up candidates. They advertise everywhere from online such as School Spring to posters in Uni hallways (those posters with a pad of information postits on them), to massive general interest job boards and even print. They are like those ESOL agencies you see on Daves ESL Cafe that recruit for China, Thailand, Vietnam, etc. they are just looking for warm bodies to fill classrooms and a contract sheet. Teach Away has nothing to do with HR or the IS management or anything. They are basically an introduction service, nothing more. They arent a dispatch agency or company that you work for, and then are sent to an IS at another site.

Keep in mind the $5700 includes your accomodation allowance - you have to pay your rent out of that figure.

True, but I know ITs/ETs that make USD$5700 work that they still save USD$5K/month. I wouldnt, but its possible.

In Abu Dhabi? Because that's where these contracts are for.

For most schools you're going to need a car to get there. Then you need some accommodation which isn't cheap in that sandbox. Then whatever you pay for food.

Not saying you can't save but $5k a month seems about $1k too high even living a minimalist lifestyle.

Really? What does a $700 a month budget in Abu Dhabi look like?

A house share in Mussafah with 4-6 occupants will run USD$500 - USD$300. That gets you a walk in closet sized amount of space enough for a bed, night stand, place to put your baggage, a little standing room and access to the bathroom and kitchen and maybe a commons area with a flat screen and some chairs (more likely with a 4 person sharing setup). Housing is the biggest expense and while that seems crowded if all your doing is working, and commuting and spend a lot of your time outside your home and all you do is go home for is sleeping, showering, pooping, its not too bad. Shared utilities would run you USD$40 - USD$50 /month.

Food costs can be reasonable depending what your IS provides, you could be getting breakfast and lunch free at your IS or a highly subsidized meal. At home egg, beans and rice are pretty cheap, add some fruit and a loaf of bread. Street food while boring and uninspired will get you some grilled meat in a flat bread for about USD$2. You could eat for $5 - $7 /day that brings you to USD$150 - USD$200 /month.

Transportation will cost you about USD$30/month but your IS should cover this. Mobile will run about USD$25 for a basic voice/text plan (you could get it down to about $10 using refill cards and relying heavily on WiFi based calling like GV). Lastly, your going to need some basic sundries figure $25/month if you keep it basic.

Looking at the averages of that:
$400 Housing
$175 Food
$45 Utilities
$30 Transportation
$25 Mobile
$25 Sundries
$700 Total
You can shave the mobile down as discussed and your IS should be paying the transportation, giving you about $45/month padding.

What kind of lifestyle is that? You wake up and grab an apple after either a quick shower, you take the metro to your IS after about an hour commute. You eat lunch at your IS which is free if you eat it in the dining hall. After last bell you use your computer/tablet/phone and the IS internet to watch movies and programing for your entertainment. You use the IS for your gym, and you borrow books from either a virtual library to your iDevice for later or you borrow them from the ISs library to take home. You leave about 7:00pm, and grab some kebabs (about $.80/each) and then decide to splurge a little bit you head to one of the expat areas for a pint (USD$10) for an hour or so and then head home after watching some premier league football. An hour to get home, you drop an egg in a pan with some already made rice, stir fry that with some soy and put it in a bowl before taking another shower and going to bed.
