Moving Schools with Child in MYP

Post by vincentchase »

We are trying to time our future move without causing too much disruption to our child who will be doing the MYP.

All else being equal, we would move when he is finished grade 6 or 7. However, would it be better to leave it until a different grade level? Staying until he finishes MYP may be pushing it out a bit too far, unfortunately.

Everything else being equal, if the MYP is the only factor, move at any point up to the end of grade 8, so he can do at least grades 9 and 10 in the same school. To earn the MYP Certificate, he has to complete Years 4 and 5 in an MYP school, and while in theory it is possible to do that in 2 different MYP schools, it can be complicated by the different ways schools implement the MYP.

I disagree with @Sid, the only MYP issue is how well the program prepares your child for DIP. Getting the MYP certificate and completing project are less issue at whatever stage than how well the program prepares you for the demands of DIP. It would be far more beneficial to join a strong MYP program whose course guides and service delivery are congruent with whatever the ISs DIP program provides in the last year of MYP than it would to stay ina weak program and complete a sub-par course that ill prepares your child for CAS, TOK, Essay as well as the subject curriculum.
Further there is no theory in practice, students move ISs and programs all the time, assuming the new IS offers the full MYP regardless of what year or grade they transfer at they will be able to complete the program and obtain the IB certificate. While it is a bit more complicated the transfer of IB transcripts is a fairly routine process, the transfer may not be ideal or perfect but its workable anywhere.

I would advise the sooner the better, the more work and time in one IS that offers/bridges MYP and DIP the better.
