Requirements for International Teaching

Post by overseassoon »

My husband is looking at teaching at an international school. He currently holds a bachelor's in music and a master's in Bible. He would be interested in primarily teaching music at an international school, but he is open to other options. He knows he needs to have 25 credits of education (required by the country we are looking at), and a state teaching certificate. Does anyone have a recommendation for the easiest or cheapest way to fulfill this requirement? We currently reside in IL, but are looking at various online programs throughout the US. He doesn't really care which state he is certified in. He also taught at a small college in the Caribbean for 2 years, but since it was not accredited it can't be used for most teaching experience requirements (like Florida's college teaching requirement for state certification). I've spent much time on this site and it looks like Teacher Ready is a popular program, but wondering about any others that may offer education credits
. Thanks in advance!

Those arent hard requirements, If a region has ETs who can get a visa with just a Bachelors than your spouse can get one as well. Its more likely a requirement for a certain class of visa or some form of permit for education, but if an IS wants to bring someone in, there is usually a visa type that will allow them to do so.

The choice of an IE credentialing program, is determined by the access your spouse has to a classroom to do their field work:

Teach Now, out of D.C. is the longest their program requires 12 weeks, which in IE would be difficult if you didnt already have an appointment to the faculty.
Teach Ready, out of FL has a week long field work requirement.
A PGCEi out of the UK is entirely an academic program and has no field experience requirement.
Utah, recently added an academic only pathway that requires completion of a Bachelors degree and certification exam in the credential being sought.

Of the four, only the PGCEi would give you the requisite credits (30 credits). Teach Now isnt regionally accredited, and Teach Ready gives you only 12 credits.
Based on your criteria, your spouse is better off finding whatever the cheapest local, online Masters program is and pursuing that. Your spouse can stop at 25 credits if they dont want to finish the program and apply for the Utah credential after completing the PRAXIS music exam at any time. If they want they can complete the Masters which would be somewhere between 30 and 42 total credits (depending on the program). I would recommend primarily school counseling or library, and technology or administration secondary for the masters program focus.
