# of interviews

Typically, how many interviews does an IS require before making a decision for a non administrative position?

It varies widely. Some want one. Some want three plus a Skype with someone who wasn't at the fair. Some will hire with only a phone or Skype interview.

It really depends on what they want, how closely you match it on paper, how many people they have in mind for the job, etc. There is no simple answer here, and it doesn't necessarily vary by the quality of the school, either, though I will say that it is not uncommon for top schools to use the fairs as a chance for the face to face when they have someone in mind, so there is only one interview. Beyond that, though, there is no rule of thumb.

Technically there is no requirement for an interview at all.

In general and most commonly one. This varies greatly in practice, much depends on who is doing the interviewing. Most recruiters do not understand the subject for a vacancy they are recruiting for, and recruiters rely on credentials and qualifications (and assessment scores) to ensure a candidate IT has content mastery. The interview is about determining 'fit'.

Two interviews is the second most common, usually with senior/executive leadership and once with someone on the instructional side (coordinator, HOD, division leadership).

With three or more interviews, the recruiter is mostly buying time by expanding the recruiting window for the vacancy or they are giving a less experienced leadership member recruiting/interview experience.

When we went to our last job fair, we had 2 (not including the first 5 minutes at the table during the cattle call), each lasting 45=60 minutes, then a job offer at the end of the 2nd. Our current job we had 3 Skype interviews with 3 different admin, each lasting 1 hour, with an offer at the end. At the job fair, the first interview was more on personality, background, a bit "softer" and the 2nd one was more the nuts and bolts. On the Skype ones, each interview started with a personality "feel" and then went to specific educational stuff. It would really depend on the quality/need/personality of the person doing the interview.
