American School Dubai

Post by samuraiwriter »

Does anyone have any info on this schools package for international hires? I am NOT looking for salary info as it is clearly stated on their website. I am curious about the housing. What is it like? Location?Commute times? Do they provide serivce buses like here in Turkey (wishful thinking)? Would indoor cats be tolerated? Etc... Etc...

Any information would be excellent. This forum has been so helpful in the past, thanks in advance.

Housing/American School of Dubai

In the past, the housing has been wonderful, but the school is undergoing tremendous change right now and with the skyrocketing cost of housing, there will undoubtedly be changes in whether teachers will be able to stay in their villas or moved to apartments.

There are numerous pages on the net devoted to cost of living, etc... in Dubai. Please keep this post on topic, no hijackers please.

Does anyone have any specific info on ASD housing. location, commute time, transport to/from school, pets, villas vs. apartments?

Thanks in advance,

Housing/American School of Dubai

SW: The housing at ASD will depend on several things..one of which is your marital status. Most (not all) singles are still housed in Bur Dubai, which is quite aways from campus. Commuting time depends upon the time of day that you are driving. (Traffic can be horrendous at times, which is why the school is moving away from having school sponsored evening activities. Our villa, for example, used to be an 8 minute drive from school. Depending upon the time of day/evening, it can now take upwards of 45 minutes. ) Families with children are still housed in villas. Some are quite close to school, others are out a bit, but I'm sure that all will be eventually relocated, especially if the new campus is built as planned. Whether those in villas will continue to be housed in villas will depend upon the housing policy that is eventually agreed upon. Already there have been some changes to the housing policy. For example, the school used to provide furnished housing and now teachers must provide their own furnishings. Also, the school used to provide maintenance and this is also now the responsibility of the teachers.

Sorry, SW, forgot to address your question about cats. In the older (DPC) villas, pets (dogs or cats) were not a problem, but those are being phased out. Also, the singles who are housed in Golden Sands can have cats. Some of the newer apartments don't allow pets, so it will depend upon where you are housed. (The school is moving away from being the "landlord"...so it will depend upon who your landlord is.)

Wait a minute...
doesn't the COLA at ASD cover the lack of furnishing issue ?

$8,404-9,878/year for a single teacher, $9,941-11,756/year for a married couple with no children and between $11,605 - 12,323/year for a married couple with children. This amount is paid locally in Dirhams in ten equal monthly payments.

Anyone out there that knows what the housing for singles is like at ASD, now? Is it a teacherage, single apartments dotted around, villas...?
Anyone care to comment on packages in the Middle East that have excellent housing for singles? I am mid career and would like some comfort at the end of the day. Thanks in advance
